Pray this Lazaroo in the fear of God:

“Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life. And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you—they will both die on the same day.”
(1 Samuel 2:33-34)

You’re longsuffering, Jesus.

For such a very long time You refrain from punishing.

But when we despise Your patience as weakness…

oh, dear God!

Watch it happen! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“‘I am against you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will leave you no prey on the earth.’”
(Nahum 2:13)

What happens to a carnivore when there’s no longer any prey, Jesus?

If they have nothing to kill

they can’t eat.

If they have nothing to eat

they’ll die.

You’re slow to anger, abounding in love.

But when Your patience is met by unrelenting, vicious behavior

You pronounce sentence.

Pray this Lazaroo with renewed faith:

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘An enemy will overrun your land, pull down your strongholds and plunder your fortresses.’”
(Amos 3:11)

When we keep sinning and sinning and sinning, Jesus…

when we continually ignore Your Voice, calling us to return to You…

there’s always a “therefore,” isn’t there?

I dare not mistake your patience for powerlessness.

I don’t want enemies to overrun my land
pull down my strongholds
plunder my fortresses.

I’ve got to repent and turn it around.

Now.

Be overcome with gratitude as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…if we are faithless, he will remain faithful…”
(2 Timothy 2:13)

Could there ever be greater evidence of Your love, Jesus?

Of Your mercy?
Of Your forgiveness?
Of Your kindness?
Of Your patience?
Of Your longsuffering?

Or of Your sovereignty!

Another way to look at it is that nothing I do
can change what You do
nor who You are!

You are faithful. Period.

That’s what I, too, as Your grateful follower
with all my heart aspire to be.

Pray this Lazaroo with the humility that comes from honesty:

“…there will be false teachers among you.”
(2 Peter 2:1)

Why, Jesus?

Why would You allow false teachers in Your Church?

I suppose that’s the same question as

why would You allow liars, addicts, adulterers, gluttons, gossips?

It’s who we are, isn’t it?

Thank God, not who You’re helping us become!

But we haven’t arrived.

Every single one of us has such a long way to go.

Since You’re lovingly correcting me…

I guess I can lovingly correct them.

Pray this Lazaroo in humility:

“I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord…”
(Philemon 1:20)

Sometimes I have to be that direct, Jesus.

When someone is dragging their feet
slow to do what they ought to do

give me the courage to say words that will light a fire under them!

Of course, that’s not always the case.

Sometimes they’re truly following You
and I’m being impatient.

O God!

Give me the wisdom to know the difference!

Pray this Lazaroo with keen anticipation:

“…the priests in their vestments…”
(Ezra 3:10)

You were specific about these sacred garments, Jesus.

First, they were to bathe.

Aaron was to put on linen undergarments

followed by the sacred woven linen tunic, robe
linen turban and sash, breastpiece and ephod.

He was to be anointed and ordained in them

giving him dignity and honor.

Since all believers are priests, You tell me to clothe myself

with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience

and most of all…with You.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.”
(Haggai 2:16)

No expectation is more false, Jesus

than when we think we can thumb our noses at You
without consequences.

What throws us off is Your patience with us.

You seldom punish us right away, as we so richly deserve.
You give us time – so much time! –

to repent and turn it around.

How much better to go expecting 50 measures

and find 1000.

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“How long must this go on?”
(Habakkuk 2:6)

Sometimes I’m stuck in what seems an intolerable situation, Jesus

which makes it feel like it will never end.

I cry out to You for relief, as though You don’t see and hear and feel.

But You do.

You don’t bring me to such places to hurt me.

You lovingly place me in them to teach me.

All I ask

is that You help me learn my lessons
really, really fast.
