Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“…against the fortified cities…”
(Zephaniah 1:16)

Those are the tough ones to take on, Jesus.

I tend to want to go after the easier ones
the low-hanging fruit.

I like heading into a project or a battle
confident I’m going to win.

In doing so, of course, I’m making a colossal mistake:

measuring the size of the goal against my abilities.

The truth is, I can’t fight my way out of a wet paper bag

without You.

But with You

I can take down any fortified city.

Pray this Lazaroo with rock-solid confidence in your God:

“…he is arrogant…”
(Habakkuk 2:5)

Arrogant people are pretty hard to stomach, Jesus.

You equip them and bless them
they collect a few wins under their belts

then conclude it’s all about them
that they did it in their own strength and wisdom.

They pound their chests, mouth boastful words

the expression on their faces is almost too much to bear

…until the day comes when You pull the rug out from under them

and expose their wickedness for all to see.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…fulfill your vows.”
(Nahum 1:15)

Well, that’s pretty straightforward, Jesus.

If I make You a promise
You expect me to keep it.

True, some of our vows to You

are made under duress.

Our backs are up against the wall, so we beg You for help.

We promise to do this, that or the other
if You come through for us.

When You do Your part

it’s easy to relax, shrug it off, explain it away
fail to do ours.

Huge mistake.

Look to your Savior, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…it will be a time of calamity.”
(Micah 2:3)

Nobody wants to hear that prediction, Jesus.

I certainly don’t.

I’ve experienced calamity in my lifetime.

I’d just as soon not face another.

Some calamities are totally out of my control, aren’t they?

Natural disasters…decisions made by others.

But some calamities are self-imposed –

triggered by my sin or poor judgment.

Open my eyes, LORD!

Strengthen my resolve!

Show me what I can do now to avoid any such calamity

before it’s too late.

Pray this Lazaroo to the only One Who can save you:

“…seaweed was wrapped around my head.”
(Jonah 2:5)

Okay, Jesus…

this one would freak me out.
It probably didn’t do a lot for Jonah, either.

It’s bad enough to be swallowed by a fish

but then, trapped in the fish’s belly
to have seaweed wrapped around his head?

Too much!

Except…come to think of it…

it did do a lot for him:

He quit running from You.

Could this be what You intend to accomplish

with some of the seaweed experiences I’m having?

Pray this Lazaroo to the One Who knows you better than you know yourself:

“…all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been.”
(Obadiah 1:16)

It doesn’t work, does it, Jesus?

The longer I run from my problems
the longer I attempt to drown my sorrows in

drink
drugs
sex
sports
politics
video games
fits of anger

the longer I put off the sweet victory
that only You can give.

I can run, but I can’t hide

from myself

from You

from what I know I need to do.

Beg God for supernatural courage as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The archer will not stand his ground…”
(Amos 2:15)

I get it, Jesus.

The archer has to stop

select the right arrow from his quiver
fit the arrow into his bow

secure his target
and pull back the bowstring.

Only then can he let the arrow fly.

It takes a lot courage to do all that
when the air is full of arrows fired at him.

I get it…

because the air is filled with Satan’s flaming arrows aimed at me.

Help me stand my ground.
