Pray this Lazaroo in passionate dedication:

“…you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame. Have you not just called to me: ‘‘My Father, my friend from my youth, will you always be angry? Will your wrath continue forever?’ This is how you talk, but you do all the evil you can.”
(Jeremiah 3:3-5)

You never were much for empty words, were You, Jesus?

Weren’t then
aren’t now.

Nor am I.

I’ve heard too many broken promises
to make any to You.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“Look up to the barren heights and see. Is there any place where you have not been ravished? By the roadside you sat waiting for lovers, sat like a nomad in the desert. You have defiled the land with your prostitution and wickedness. Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen.”
(Jeremiah 3:2-3)

You liken Your people to a brazen prostitute, Jesus

making it clear how You view our continual sins.

O God!

Keep me pure before You –

in my thoughts, words and deeds.

Pray this Lazaroo with deepened, determined understanding:

“…was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”
(James 2:25-26)

I have faith in You, Jesus. I do.

Because that’s true
my actions will show it.

But if there is no behavior to back up my faith

the reality of my faith
can be called into question.

Pray this Lazaroo in broken repentance:

“‘If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers—would you now return to me?’ declares the Lord.”
(Jeremiah 3:1)

Once again, You’re teaching on two levels, Jesus –

on marriage
on my relationship with You.

But the answer to Your question is yes!

If I have strayed

I will return to You forever – with all my heart!

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit:

“…old wine and new wine take away their understanding. My people consult a wooden idol, and a diviner’s rod speaks to them. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God. They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar and terebinth, where the shade is pleasant.”
(Hosea 4:11-13)

Addiction…spiritual cluelessness…idol worship…prostitution…unfaithfulness.

O, Jesus!

These are the sins still plaguing us today.

Deliver us, Mighty God!
Deliver us!

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute.”
(Jeremiah 2:20)

Strong words, Jesus.

Hard to hear.
But even worse, hard for You to see:

Your people worshiping other gods
instead of remaining faithful to You.

That’s exactly how You view me

every time I put someone or something
ahead of obedience to You:

as a prostitute.

Help, LORD!

That’s not what I want You to see when You look at me.

Pray this Lazaroo with growing understanding:

“…they…prostituted themselves to other gods…”
(Judges 2:17)

You hate idol worship, don’t You, Jesus?

It’s not theoretical.
It’s not legalistic.
It’s Personal.

To You, it’s like it would be for a husband

who discovered his wife was moonlighting as a prostitute
while he was at work.

That helps me understand a little better

why You command us to smash idols

why, after giving us chance after chance to repent

You’re finally forced to punish the very ones You love.

Take warning as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The metal on the chariots flashes…”
(Nahum 2:3)

It’s happening in broad daylight, Jesus

and there’s not one thing the Ninevites can do about it.
This punishment is from You.

Why?

It was their cruelty, wasn’t it?
their witchcraft and prostitution.

You sent your prophet Jonah to warn them.

They listened! Repented!
You relented.

But after You showed them kindness

they went right back to it.

O God!

May I never repeat their mistake
in response to Your grace.

Pray this Lazaroo with full-on ardor:

“I will live with you.”
(Hosea 3:3)

Nothing unusual to say to a wife, Jesus…

unless she’s left her husband to become a prostitute –
which is exactly what Hosea’s wife Gomer had done.

There was only one reason he took her back:

You told him to.

To his everlasting credit, he did it –

maybe the hardest command he ever obeyed.

You wanted to demonstrate through him what You’ve done with me

in taking me back
after all my sins.

Pray this Lazaroo with passion:

“…you must not…be intimate with any man…”
(Hosea 3:3)

Why would Hosea say such a thing to his wife, Jesus?

Actually, he had a pretty good reason:

She had cheated on him.

So why would he take her back?

Which raises another question:

Why have You taken me back?

I’ve sinned.
That’s cheating on You.

Hosea took back Gomer because You told him to

which is the same reason I’ve got to forgive those

who’ve sinned against me.
