Pray this Lazaroo in stark realization:

“Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’”
(Genesis 3:13)

I know that feeling, Jesus –

I know it well –

the sick stomach that comes when You confront me
when the Holy Spirit removes the blinders
when I see exactly how much I have hurt You.

Because that’s the worst of it.

Not the guilt, though it’s terrible.
Not the consequences, which are either here or on the way.

But how I’ve betrayed You.

Pray this Lazaroo with excuseless humility:

“Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD Loves…”
(Malachi 2:11)

Those last three words are what get to me, Jesus.

Of course, I should never desecrate Your sanctuary.

But when You remind me of how much You love Your sanctuary

that takes any sin against her
to a whole ‘nuther level.

My first thought goes to the physical church building where I worship with Your people.

Then I realize that my body is a temple for Your Holy Spirit.

Pray this Lazaroo in stunned gratitude:

“The LORD will…again choose…”
(Zechariah 2:12)

When I’ve done what I shouldn’t have, Jesus

sinning against You

when my sins have forced You to discipline me

bringing me pain, sorrow, suffering, excruciating regret

it can feel like You and I will never be close again
that I’ve forever lost the precious intimacy we had –

until, in repentance, I look up in happy, near disbelief

to realize You choose once again

to experience deep, daily, moment-by-moment

1on1 relationship with me.

Pray this Lazaroo in passionate gratitude:

“Until now…”
(Haggai 2:19)

The “until now” of the past tries to hold us captive, Jesus

But You came to change that.

In You –

what I used to be, used to do, the way I used to think –

are irrelevant.

My future is as bright as Your promises –

which are dazzlingly brilliant!

I’m no longer required to drive forward while looking in my rearview mirror.

In You, I can look ahead

and see unfolding before my eyes

new possibilities!

Pray this Lazaroo with growing understanding:

“…seek humility…
(Zephaniah 2:3)

Won’t have to seek long, Jesus.

If I’m genuinely looking for humility I’m gonna find it

in the blessings I don’t deserve

in the skills I don’t possess
to accomplish what I desire

in the sins I’ve committed
too many times to count

in the reality that I didn’t put myself here.
You created me, sustain me, own me.

So, yeah.

If I’m truly on the lookout for humility
it’ll hit me smack dab between the eyes.

Pray this Lazaroo in wisdom, self-control and total trust:

“…forfeiting your life.”
(Habakkuk 2:10)

That seems incomprehensible, Jesus!

Why would anyone forfeit his life?
Why would she throw away something so precious?

But people do it all the time. Why?

Because Your gracious gift of life can become soiled, feel ruined

by sin…pain…sickness…fear…hatred…loss.

And in the darkness that our emotions and Satan himself brings

people can lose hope
abandon perspective
think irrationally

act hastily…foolishly.

But You’re the Giver of life!

My life is not my own to take.

Know it! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…the palace collapses.”
(Nahum 2:6)

When that happens, Jesus

it leaves people in shock.

These high and mighty leaders with their unimaginable resources

seem untouchable.

But they’re not.

One nudge from Your pinkie finger
one puff of air from your left nostril

is all it takes!

…and down they go –

while those who revere Your Name and trust in You alone

enjoy incomprehensible blessing and protection!

You’ve warned me:

In this world I’ll have trouble.

But that’s okay.

Because You overcome the world!

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“…it is defiled…”
(Micah 2:10)

Someone or something starts out fine, Jesus

and then it’s defiled.

A word or action displeasing to You is all it takes

for it to be defiled.

You give me specific instructions about life

that You intend for me to follow.

When I don’t do it the way You prescribe

I defile the very thing You’ve provided to be a blessing.

How foolish.
What a waste!

May I never, ever defile one of Your gifts!

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“He proclaimed, ‘Forty more days and Ninevah will be overturned.’”
(Jonah 3:4)

Finally, Jonah obeyed You, Jesus.

First, he ran away
hopped a ship in the opposite direction.

Stupid decision.
No one can run away from You.

You sent a storm so bad the sailors threw him overboard
had a great fish swallow him until he repented, then spit him out.

Now, he’s preaching like You told him to.

How much better
when I obey You the first time!

Pray this Lazaroo in relaxed anticipation:

“…the exiles…will possess the towns of the Negev.”
(Obadiah 1:20)

Finding out they were going to be given towns

probably sounded great, Jesus…

until they found out they were in a desert

of brown, rocky, dusty mountains
filled with deep craters and dry riverbeds.

Inhospitable? Sure.

But they were exiles.
They made do.

My accommodations on this earth are temporary.

Until I arrive at my permanent home in heaven

I’ll take what I get
and not throw a fit.
