Pray this Lazaroo in humbled repentance:

“Anyone who runs ahead…”
(2 John 1:9)

It’s hard to admit, Jesus

but I’ve been guilty of running ahead.

Inexcusably, I got tired of waiting on You.

After praying, I expected an immediate answer.

I gave no thought to Your superior understanding –

that compared to You, I was totally clueless.

So I went ahead with what I thought was best

only to discover to my sorrow

that anyone who runs ahead of Your perfect way and time

ends up running way, waaaaay behind.

Pray this Lazaroo in solemn recognition:

“Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?”
(Hebrews 3:16-17)

It’s bad enough to miss Your will when I haven’t heard from You, Jesus

but it’s inexcusable when I have.
No wonder You were so angry with Your people!

The thing is…

I’ve read the Bible.
I’ve heard.

Pray this Lazaroo with opened eyes:

“If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.”
(James 2:11)

Pretty obvious, Jesus –

when I see it in somebody else.

But You’re pointing this out through Your half-brother James

because I have a hard time seeing it in myself.

I tend to look at other people’s sins as foolish, tragic, inexcusable

while seeing my own sins as no big deal.

How blind can I be?

I think I’ve already answered that question.

Keep first things first, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Another thing you do…”
(Malachi 2:13)

Just when I think I’m getting away scot-free with my disobedience, Jesus

I’m reminded that You see everything I do
hear everything I say
know everything I think.

When I repent, do You refuse to remember my sins?

Yes. You do.

HALLELUJAH!

You remove my inexcusably wicked acts
as far away from me as the east is from the west!

But the operative phrase is:

“When I repent.”

Which I’d better do.

Right now.

Pray this Lazaroo with explosive feeling:

“They displease God…”
             (1 Thessalonians 2:15)

How dare I, Jesus?

Unthinkable. Inexcusable. Indefensible.

But I have.

Dear God, I have displeased You –
more times than I can count.

That wasn’t my aim.

All I was doing…was what I wanted to do.

The reason I said what I did…
was that’s what I felt like saying.

I just wasn’t thinking.

No…that’s not quite right.
I was thinking, all right – about myself.

But not about You.

I’m truly sorry.

That changes.
Today.

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“…you have…shown partiality in matters of the law.”
(Malachi 2:9)

Not something that pleases You, Jesus.

You gave Your law to be applied equally, fairly, to all.
Instead, they used it inconsistently

holding some to its righteous standards
excusing others.

I can’t begin to imagine how displeased You are

with my inconsistency, LORD.

Please forgive me!
I am utterly without excuse.

All I can do is give it everything I’ve got

and beg You to be Yourself in me.

Pray this Lazaroo in deepest repentance:

“…to present you…without blemish…”
(Colossians 1:22)

Well, that would certainly require one of Your greatest miracles, Jesus!

My blemishes are without number.

In fact, “blemish” is too small a word for what they are.

They’re disfigurements.

When I look in the mirror of my life

and dare to hold Your Image beside mine

I’m ashamed.

The one thing that gives me hope

is the certain knowledge of how much worse I’d be
if I hadn’t given myself to You.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“…on the day of the LORD’s wrath…the whole world will be consumed…”
(Zephaniah 1:18)

As terrifying as that day will be, Jesus

it’s Your right.

You’re the Creator of everything. You put us here.

You can take us out.

In fact, in light of our inexcusable, outrageous behavior

it’s only because of Your great mercy
that You haven’t done it already.

I know You’re the God of the second-googolth chance.

But one day
the last chance will run out.

Pray this Lazaroo in zealous love:

“…it is the gift of God…”
(Ephesians 2:8)

That’s what my salvation is, Jesus –

an undeserved, unmerited, outrageous gift.

The people I live and work with would all pitch in with a passionate

“Amen!”

As do I.

The thoughts with which I wrestle
the words that slip out

my countless inexcusable behaviors
the actions I should’ve taken but didn’t

testify that my home in heaven is a miscarriage of justice

and the highest proof
of Your costly, loving mercy.

Pray this Lazaroo with self awareness:

“…their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.”
(Nehemiah 3:5)

That’s a pretty stubborn case of laziness, Jesus.

Most people work when their supervisors are standing over them.
It’s when their supervisors leave that lazy people stop work.

“People don’t do what you expect…they do what you inspect.”

But these people refused to work in full view of their bosses!

Shameful.
Inexcusable.

Like the times I sin
even though I know You’re watching.
