Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? As it is written: ‘God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.’”
(Romans 2:21-24)

O Holy Spirit!

Is there anything I’m doing – or not doing –

that causes unbelievers to think less of You?

If so, I beg You to show me!

In Your Holy Name, dear Jesus!

Amen!

Take it to heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink.”
(Jonah 3:7)

Why would the king of Ninevah issue such a harsh decree, Jesus?

It was because of Jonah’s preaching, wasn’t it?

After You forced him to show up in that wicked city
You declared You were about to destroy them.

The king took You at Your Word and went all out to change your mind.

How seriously do I take Your warnings?

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“He proclaimed, ‘Forty more days and Ninevah will be overturned.’”
(Jonah 3:4)

Finally, Jonah obeyed You, Jesus.

First, he ran away
hopped a ship in the opposite direction.

Stupid decision.
No one can run away from You.

You sent a storm so bad the sailors threw him overboard
had a great fish swallow him until he repented, then spit him out.

Now, he’s preaching like You told him to.

How much better
when I obey You the first time!

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“In those days, John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea…”
(Matthew 3:1)

Preaching?

Yes, Jesus.

But preaching in the desert?

Uh….why?

Generally, it’s a good idea to go preach where the people are

not where wild goats and cacti
might be the only ones listening.

But that was Your strategy, not John’s.

He was just obeying orders.

Turns out that preaching in the desert was so strange

that You sent vast crowds of curious people out there to him.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose…”
(Acts 2:23)

Peter preaching on the Day of Pentecost, Jesus –

proclaiming to His fellow Jews:

that at their unbelieving hands
Your Father deliberately sacrificed You on the cross

in order to pay for their sins
and give them eternal life in heaven.

You did the same for me, Father!

You gave Your only Son to die
so that I might live.

May I do so!
Only for You.

Pray this Lazaroo in purest devotion:

“A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum…”
(Mark 2:1)

A second chance with You, Jesus.

Priceless.

During Your first visit to Capernaum

You taught with authority –
casting out demons, healing the sick.

That night the whole town showed up at Peter’s door.
But next day you left Capernaum to preach in nearby villages.

If I have strayed one inch from Your love, mercy, truth and power

draw me back to You, my Savior!
never to falter again.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“My message and my preaching…”
(1 Corinthians 2:4)

The message and the preaching…

they’re not the same, are they, Jesus?

You’re the one who gives the message.

The preacher is the one who delivers it.

Many a great message

has been diminished by a poor preacher.

But Your Word is so powerful and compelling

that even the worst of preachers

if they manage to quote from the Bible

can watch in awe

as You totally transform their hearer’s lives.

Pray this Lazaroo with lavish love:

“Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard…”
(John 1:40)

Am I, LORD?

Have I heard?

With you, Jesus, working ears isn’t the issue.

Neither is being in the crowd
where Your Word is preached.

It’s not being able to quote it
nor discussing what was said.

I haven’t truly heard until I’ve obeyed it

been challenged to disavow it
and refused

been tempted to desert You
and stood firm.

Only then

have I truly heard.

Pray this Lazaroo with earnest desire:

“…walk in the truth.”
(3 John 1:3)

That’s the only thing worthy of the truth, isn’t it, Jesus?

To walk in it.

Knowing the truth isn’t enough

neither is reading the truth
thinking about the truth

talking the truth
preaching the truth
recommending the truth.

In fact, there’s a sense in which it isn’t the truth

until I walk in it.

Before then, it’s powerless to help me.

Only after I walk in it

does its joy
come alive.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“My message and my preaching were not with wise…words…”
(1 Corinthians 2:4)

Well, that was totally unexpected, Jesus.

I would have thought as educated as he was
the Apostle Paul would have dropped pearls of wisdom on them

in every other sentence.

But he was no longer interested in impressing them

getting them to focus on himself.

He wasn’t trying to create followers of Paul.

He was all about one thing and one thing only:

pointing them to You.
