Pray this Lazaroo with growing understanding:

“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks…”
(Obadiah 1:3)

I might think I’ve found a little hidey-hole, Jesus

a place where I can do what I want to do

unseen by others
safe from all harm.

But if I think that, I don’t know You.

You. See.
You. Know.

There isn’t anywhere I can go to hide from You.

So next time I head to my hideout

help me think, say and do
only what brings honor to You!

Pray this Lazaroo in peaceful trust:

“In the evening they will lie down in the houses of Ashkelon. The Lord their God will care for them…”
(Zephaniah 2:7)

Ashkelon was one of the most secure, well-defended cities of its day, Jesus.

Those who lived there could sleep soundly

knowing they were protected by a huge wall on the land side
and by a high natural bluff on the side facing the sea.

But may I always remember:

Without Your protection, nobody is safe.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“…done in the body by the hands of men…”
(Ephesians 2:11)

Paul was referring to circumcision, Jesus.

But there are a lot of things people do
that give them a false sense of security:

knocking on wood
refusing to walk under a ladder
avoiding black cats

performing good deeds
making significant sacrifices
trying really hard
giving lots of money

in order to earn a place in heaven.

But protection, safety, security can be found in only one place:

You.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“…they quickly turned from the way in which their fathers had walked….”
(Judges 2:17)

What a devastating outcome, Jesus!

These people were taught right.
They had good examples set before them.

Their parents hadn’t failed.

They had.

They couldn’t wait to throw off the restraints of righteousness

hurrying to leave the safe, narrow path.

Instead, they lusted after the broad, popular path of wickedness.

Rejecting their heritage
they plunged themselves into the inescapable consequences

of the dark, hellish pit.

Pray this Lazaroo in deepest gratitude:

“…a city of refuge…”
(1 Chronicles 6:57)

Your compassion is beyond measure, Jesus!

You designated these cities in Israel
where hunted men and women could flee.

If they had unintentionally killed someone
their avengers were not allowed to touch them.

There they could receive a fair trial – and if found innocent –
could stay safe until the death of the high priest.

You’re my High Priest and only Refuge, Jesus!

where I will stay forever
because You will never die.

Wise up! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Many will follow their shameful ways…”
(2 Peter 2:2)

When “everybody’s doing it,” Jesus

it’s tempting to do it with them.
It feels safer.

But not when the crowd is opposed to You!

‘cause that whole crowd is marching right over the cliff.

Is it tough to stand alone?

Sometimes, yes.

But I’m not alone, am I?

I have You –

not to mention untold millions of my brother and sister Christians.

Because Satan’s a liar.
Everybody’s not “doing it.”

Pray this Lazaroo with undiluted sincerity:

“…follow along after the girls.”
(Ruth 2:9)

Good advice, Jesus –

so long as the girls are headed in the right direction
so long as they’re doing the right thing.

In this case, they were…and Ruth was safe.

But sometimes the girls – and guys – are headed straight to the pit.
Sometimes what they’re doing is the wrong thing to do.

Which is why when I follow anyone – man or woman –

I’ve got to be doubly…triply
double-dog certain

they’re following You.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“Stay here with my servant girls.”
(Ruth 2:8)

That wasn’t a put-down, Jesus.

Boaz told Ruth to stay with his servant girls
because that’s where it was safe.

Bad things can happen to a woman gleaning alone
surrounded by men in a stranger’s field.

Bad things can happen to me, too.

Some already have.

Well, that is, they would have been bad…

except that I’m among Your servants

doing Your work

the only place where it’s eternally safe.

Pray this Lazaroo with transparency:

“I said in my heart…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

If I say it in my heart

that’s where it counts, Jesus –
the place where only You can see.

Some of the things I say with my lips

don’t really reflect what’s in my heart.

I don’t mean to be a hypocrite.

I don’t want to be a person
who pretends to be someone I’m not.

But not everything that’s in my heart

is safe to say out loud
or wise.
