Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“Whoever loves his brother lives in the light…”
(1 John 2:10)

It’s not that loving one of Your children saves me, Jesus…

it’s that if I’m truly on my way to heaven
I’ll love my brothers and sisters in You

even those as deeply flawed
as am I.

With some, it’s easy.

With others, as with me,
it takes a heap of intent.

It helps to realize that more than a feeling.

love is treating others as You command.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“Nation will not take up sword against nation…”
(Isaiah 2:4)

We all long for that day, Jesus!

Well…those of us who love peace.

This is Your promise:

That day will come.

Millions are working and praying for it.

But it won’t be ours until the Last Day.
Nor will we bring it about.

You will.

Until then, thank You for the men, women, leaders and nations willing to take up swords

so the rest of us don’t have to.

Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“…you will do well to pay attention to it…”
(2 Peter 2:19)

The old joke isn’t true, Jesus:

“I’m too poor to pay attention.”

The poorer I am, the more attention I need to pay to Your Word.

You…are my only hope out of the ghetto of my poverty.

But that’s not all.

The richer I am, the more attention I need to pay to Your Word.

You…are my only hope out of the ghetto of my self-sufficient pride.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“The season of singing has come…”
(Song of Songs 2:12)

I’ve tasted that season, Jesus!

I’m ready to experience it again.

Of course, referring to it as a “season” reminds me that it never lasts.

It has its time
then gives way to a season in which there is less singing

and sometimes more weeping.

But that too gives way to other seasons –

like those that offer bright, happy days of rejoicing
mixed with the unwelcome gift of suffering.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“…handed down to you from your forefathers…”
(1 Peter 1:18)

Nuthin’ like a hand-me-down, Jesus…

‘specially when it’s from those who’ve gone before me
those through whom You gave me life.

I wouldn’t be here without them.
I owe them a lot.

But I don’t owe them everything.

Everything…

…is what I owe You.

Only You.

Please, LORD!

Help me figure out which of my ancestors’ hand-me-downs
I need to slip on…

and which I need to slip off.

Pray this Lazaroo…perceptively:

“The wise man has eyes in his head…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:14)

Doesn’t everybody, Jesus?

Apparently not.

It’s one thing to have the equipment

quite another to know how to use it.

How many times have I looked right at something

and had no idea what I was seeing?

But I wasn’t seeing, was I?

I was just a-lookin’
oblivious to what it meant.

God, please!

Grant me the wisdom to see where I’m looking
with these eyes in my head.

Pray this Lazaroo in Godly self-control:

“…does not keep a tight rein on his tongue…”
(James 1:26)

You know how hard it is for anyone to control their tongue, Jesus!

and I’m no exception.

Oh, I think I do all right most of the time…

but that’s not good enough, is it?

Like the rider of a horse that can suddenly buck and gallop away out of control

I’ve got to constantly be on my guard
every time I saddle up to open my mouth.

Pray this Lazaroo in sobered humility:

“Wisdom will save you…from the wayward wife…who has left the partner of her youth…”
(Proverbs 2:12, 16-17)

There’s not a man alive who doesn’t need that wisdom, Jesus

not a wife who doesn’t need Your help
to keep from becoming that woman.

The more conscientious the person

the less worried they are it will happen to them
the more vulnerable they become to Satan’s trap.

Better people than I have fallen!

Don’t allow me
to let down my guard.

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful adoration:

“…by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil…”
(Hebrews 2:14)

Powerfully ironic, Jesus – and totally unexpected.

When jealous religious leaders crucified You
Satan thought he had won.

But stunningly, it was Your death that defeated Satan!

With Your wholly undeserved death
You paid for the sins of all who put their faith in You

just as when I die to myself
I rise in thrilling triumph over the evil one.
