Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb…”
(Luke 1:41)

I can’t blame the baby, Jesus.

The voice of the Messiah’s mother had just spoken.

The baby who leaped in Elizabeth’s womb was John

Your cousin
the promised Elijah
sent to prepare the way for You.

Of course, babies can’t know such things.

Unborn babies leap at unexpected sounds.

But this much I know:

If John had known whose voice it was
he would have leaped.

Pray this Lazaroo in profound gratitude:

“…take the bull outside the camp…”
(Leviticus 4:21)

This was no ordinary bull, Jesus –

it was slaughtered as a sin offering.

You were teaching your people how horrible it was to disobey You:

Something had to die.

You were also preparing them for the day when they would finally realize that a bull wasn’t enough

that our sins could only be paid for

when they took You outside the city

and You laid down Your life for us.

Pray this Lazaroo with white-hot fervor:

“Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.”
(Mark 1:42)

If only that would happen every time I pray, Jesus!

I know You did it for this man.
I know You have the power to do it today.
I know You love me enough to do it for me…

if that’s what’s best.

That’s why it doesn’t happen every time I pray, isn’t it?

Because in my lack of wisdom and knowledge
I seldom ask for what’s best.

Pray this Lazaroo with total transparency:

“…you will worship God on this mountain.”
(Exodus 3:12)

You love to do this, don’t You, Jesus?

to turn a place of humiliating defeat
into a site of glorious triumph!

You met Moses at Mount Horeb where he was tending someone else’s sheep

informed him that he would return to this mountain

with three million people in tow
to hear Your voice and receive Your law.

O Father!

What will You do here one day

in this place
through me?

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“…he was furious.”
(Matthew 2:16)

There are good reasons to become furious, Jesus

and some not so good.

Fury is a dangerous emotion.

It can negatively affect my judgment
goading me to do something rash.

On the other hand, fury can also embolden me to do what’s right

to take heroic action
without fear of what will happen to me

just so long as it’s Your fury I’m operating in

and not giving in to my own.

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intensity:

“…knowing good and evil.”
(Genesis 3:5)

It’s one thing to know what’s good and what’s evil, Jesus

quite another to do one
and refuse the other.

Sure, there are some sins I might accidentally commit

some good deeds I inadvertently overlook.

But how can I claim ignorance as my excuse for any of those

when I refuse to obey even one of Your clear commands

or deliberately engage in an activity

that I know full well You have expressly forbidden?

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“He walked with me in peace…”
(Malachi 2:6)

May that be said of me, Jesus

now…

and after I depart –

when my time on earth is through.

Can that be said of me?

On my good days, yes.

But there are still too many days of my life that I surrender to

doubt
fear
worry
turmoil
unrest.

My fault. Not Yours.

You’ve promised to keep me in perfect peace

if I will keep my mind steadfast
trusting You.

Pray this Lazaroo with excuseless humility:

“Escape…”
(Zechariah 2:7)

Sounds, good, Jesus.

There are some things I’m determined to escape:

error
ignorance
meaningless pain
disgrace
lack of focus
foolishness – mine and others’
inefficiency
wasted time
irrelevance
disobedience
unforgiveness
weakness
every attack of Satan

hell

Pray this Lazaroo in holy fear:

“…whatever they offer…is defiled.”
(Haggai 2:14)

So much for trying to buy You off, Jesus.

Gifts given to You are great
instantly becoming eternal heavenly treasure

when given in sincerity of heart
when given by people who trust You completely
when given by those who obey You wholeheartedly.

But when given as a show, as leverage for selfish gain

to placate You for deliberate, continuing, unrepentant sin
by those whose faith is mere pretense

whatever they offer is defiled.
