Pray this Lazaroo in total honesty:

“Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.”
(1 John 2:10)

I must not love all my brothers and sisters, Jesus

because I sure have done my share of stumbling.

The thing is, I do love my brothers and sisters

officially.

But it’s a lot harder to love some of them

actually.

Maybe it would help if I dared to remember how hard it is

to actually
love me.

Pray this Lazaroo with undying hope:

“…nor will they train for war anymore.”
(Isaiah 2:4)

The best way to win a war is to train for it, Jesus.

So as long as the potential exists

for someone to go to war against me
or those for whom I’m responsible

I’d better train to fight it and win it.

That’s not how I prefer to spend my time.

But until You come and defeatĀ all who desire to kill, steal and destroy

I’m left with no choice.

Pray this Lazaroo with sold-out surrender:

“And we have the word of the prophets…a light shining in a dark place…”
(2 Peter 1:19)

The world started out dark, Jesus, until You said –

“’Let there be light,’
and there was light.”

But all too soon, we bought into Satan’s lies

and the world plunged into a gloom far worse:
spiritual darkness.

So You gave us prophets –

ordinary people whose mouths You filled with Light –

to tide us over until You arrived in Person:

the Ultimate Light.

Pray this Lazaroo with lavish love:

“…the cooing of doves is heard in our land.”
(Song of Songs 2:12)

How beautiful, Jesus…

the soothing, healing, peaceful song of the dove

a sign that winter had passed

that spring had come.

During Jesus’ baptism

You descended on Him like a dove, Holy Spirit

signifying that the long winter of our slavery to sin had passed

that the Savior of the world had come
bringing the warming springtime of love, hope and forgiveness

to my weary, frostbittenĀ soul.

Pray this Lazaroo in unchecked adoration:

“…the precious blood of Christ…”
(1 Peter 1:19)

Your blood is precious to me, Jesus

because it took the place of mine

because all of my blood
couldn’t have paid my sin-debt even as much

as one drop of Yours

because I fully deserve to bleed and die
for my inexcusable offenses against You

while You do not –
not for Your own –
and certainly not for mine.

May I never forget the price You paid

to save my soul.

Pray this Lazaroo in desperate transparency:

“…the fool walks in the darkness…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:14)

I’ve taken more than one of those dark walks, Jesus

Didn’t enjoy it.
Felt like the fool I was.

I don’t want to do that anymore!

With every step I take, I long to walk in Your Light.
I long to see clearly, act wisely.

But only You can rescue me from the wrong choices that will inevitably shroud my path in the blindness known all too well

by God-ignoring fools.

Pray this Lazaroo in self-awareness:

“…he deceives himself…”
(James 1:26)

Is this the worst kind of deception, Jesus?

If not, it’s awfully close.

When somebody else deceives me, it’s tough enough

but at least I can identify the culprit
evaluate how I got duped
learn from my mistake.

But when I deceive myself I’ve got no one else to blame.

It’s much tougher to admit I’m the culprit

You’re my only hope, Holy Spirit!

Open my eyes
wise me up

Protect me from myself.

Pray this Lazaroo with white-hot fervor:

“…who has…ignored the covenant she made before God.”
(Proverbs 2:17)

A covenant with You is one I’d better never break, Jesus –

whether it’s one I made when standing before a preacher
one I swore before a judge as I lifted my right hand
or one I made while dug into a foxhole, bartering for my life.

But the thing is…

every promise I make is before You!

You hear every word I speak

and hold me accountable.

Pray this Lazaroo in heartfelt gratitude:

“…free those…held in slavery…”
(Hebrews 2:15)

That’s what You’re all about, isn’t it, Jesus?

You love to free slaves.

Yes! – people who are enslaved because of the color of their skin!
But there are other kinds of slavery, too:

financial slavery to crushing debt
the stronger over the weaker
governmental abuse
sex slavery.

But because of its eternal consequences

the worst slavery of all is slavery to sin

Thank God!

Freedom from that slavery
is Your absolute specialty.

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“I, by your great mercy, will come into your house…”
(Psalms 5:7)

Certainly, that’s true of heaven, Jesus.

But that’s also true of the temporary houses of worship
You’ve set up on this earth.

May I never walk into a cathedral, tabernacle, storefront church or join any group of believers

seated in a living room
a coffee shop
on a bus bench
or gathered under a tree

without recognizing how unworthy I am to experience such a sacred privilege.
