Pray this Lazaroo with unquenchable longing:

“…the spring of living water…”
(Jeremiah 2:13)

That’s who You are, Jesus…

and this thirsty pilgrim is grateful beyond words.

You’ve promised that because I’ve chosen to put my faith in You

my soul will never thirst again

my spirit will enjoy the continual refreshing
that only You can provide –

with the caveat that once I’ve tasted and seen how good You are

I will always want more

driven to drink deeply of You

again

and again

and again.

Let the Light dawn, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…whoever hates his brother…walks around in the darkness…”
(1 John 2:11)

It’s bad enough to hate my brother or sister in You, Jesus

and be stuck in the darkness.

But You’re telling me it doesn’t stop there, Holy Spirit.

You’re explaining that to hate one of Your children –

no matter how weak or obnoxious

is to try to navigate the darkness

without a light.

There’s a whole lot of stumbling, falling, disappointment and pain.

That certainly explains a lot.

Pray this Lazaroo in sobered assessment:

“You have abandoned your people…”
(Isaiah 2:6)

It certainly seems like that during some seasons, Jesus

and in reality, You do abandon Your people
for a time.

When we repeatedly sin against You

You withdraw.

It’s one thing when we try and fail

repent, get up and try again.

But it’s an entirely different matter

when we willingly, knowingly, deliberately reject You.

That’s when You back off for a while

and let us stew
in our own foul juices.

Open yourself to His glory, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…until…the morning star rises in your hearts.”
(2 Peter 1:19)

Some people think the morning star is Venus or Mercury, Jesus.

Some think it’s Sirius – apart from the sun
the brightest star in earth’s sky.

In Greek mythology it’s Phosphorus.
In Slavic mythology it’s one of their Zorya.
It’s At-Tariq in the Qur’an.

Before his fall, Satan was known as a morning star

but not the morning star.

There is only one truly bright and morning star, Jesus!

You.

Pray this Lazaroo in humble adulation:

“…the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.”
(Song of Songs 2:13)

That is so, so, so like You, Jesus!

A lot of us don’t much care for vines.

They wrap around trees and other desirables

choking the life out of our preferred plants
unless we keep the vines chopped out.

So what do You do?

You give the vines flowers.

To top it off

You give the flowers fragrance

reminding me that even the things I hate

come from You.

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful awe:

“He was chosen before the creation of the world…”
(1 Peter 1:20)

Yes, You were, Jesus

because it was by You and for You that the world was created.

In fact, You and I have that in common –

not the “creating the world” part –
but the “chosen before the creation of the world” part.

You chose me

then created a world in which I could live

and love
and learn
and thrive

and grow to be more like You.

Pray this Lazaroo with Scripture-infused emotion:

“Then I thought in my heart…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

Thinking in my heart goes deeper

than thinking in my mind, doesn’t it, Jesus?

The thoughts that arise deep within my heart

often get there through painful means.

They’re lessons hard-learned
battles hard-won…

…and lost.

The thoughts in my heart are the real me, aren’t they, Holy Spirit?

May all the words of my mouth and meditations of my heart
be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Take stock, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
(James 1:27)

Well that clears up a few things, Jesus!

Our list of religious behaviors is longer.

Perhaps because it’s easier to help widows and orphans

than to keep myself unpolluted by the world.

Am I adding to the list

in an attempt to mask my worldly pollution?

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“…her paths [lead] to the spirts of the dead.”
(Proverbs 2:18)

You’re speaking of those who commit adultery, Jesus

who betray their marriage partners
in affairs and one night stands.

That choice leads to death of so many kinds, doesn’t it?

Death of trust, hopes, dreams
stability, innocence.

But having said that

I cannot begin to thank You enough
for the new life of Your mercy.

Even for the worst of us

You’re the God of the Second Chance.

Rejoice! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.”
(Hebrews 2:16)

I don’t know how crazy the angels are about that statement, Jesus

but the Jews have to like it a lot

those who truly are Abraham’s descendants, that is –

not those who are merely his biologically
but those who live by the faith of Abraham

who took You at Your Word
no matter what the cost.

On that basis

please consider me a descendant of Abraham.
