Pray this Lazaroo with outrageous adoration:

“My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ…”
(James 2:1)

This is about as clear as You could possibly make it, Jesus:

If someone believes in You
they’re family.

They’re as much my brother and my sister

as though we shared the same biological mom and dad.

On second thought, they’re even more.

As good as natural parents can possibly be
none of them can match You.

My truest family

is the one that lasts
forever.

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“None who go to her return…”
(Proverbs 2:19)

You’re talking about people who go to prostitutes, Jesus.

By saying they don’t return
You’re saying such a person is never the same again.

There’s something about violating the sanctity of marriage

that does lasting damage to the person who pays for it
and the person who sells it.

But there’s also something about repentance

that leads to forgiveness
that results in life-change

that gives Your broken people
a fresh start.

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way…”
(Hebrews 2:17)

I can’t imagine what it meant to give up what You had

to be one of us, Jesus!

The Creator of heaven and earth

restricting Himself to be somebody people could
criticize, mock, ridicule, reject, spit on
nail to a cross and watch die.

That would be like me volunteering to become an ant

only worse.

And You did it

all for love.

Pray this Lazaroo with white-hot fervor:

“Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies…”
(Psalms 5:8)

I don’t know, Jesus –

Is it easier to live a righteous life while my enemies are attacking
or when it appears they’re giving me a break?

While under attack

I might lean hard on You…
or get discouraged and sin.

When free from attack

I might worship You in gratitude…
or grow complacent and stray.

Please, LORD!

In trouble or not
lead me all the time.

Go to school, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The fate of the fool will overtake me also…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

Solomon’s right, Jesus:

Just as the person who foolishly disbelieves in you
will one day breathe their last on this earth

so will those who believe in You with all their hearts.

But Solomon was also wrong:

Unlike the unbelieving fool
every believer who closes their eyes here

will open them in heaven.

Sadly, as he grew older, Solomon disobeyed You.

May I not follow his foolish example.

Pray this Lazaroo with total transparency:

“If he…owes you anything, charge it to me.”
(Philemon 1:18)

Is there anything more loving than this, Jesus?

Well, yes, I guess there is:
Your death on the cross!

But still…this one’s right up there.

It’s signing a blank check in behalf of another person.

Not only does that show love for the person
but it demonstrates significant trust in the creditor.

May more and more of my relationships

be marked by this kind of love and trust!

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed?”
(Job 3:12)

What a heartbreak, Jesus!

Job is in such pain that he wishes he had been allowed
to starve to death as an infant, uncared for and unloved.

That’s how Satan attempts to pervert my response to pain.

He tries to twist it
to blind me into hating what is good

to turn me against You.

No. Never.

In my pain
I trust You.

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intensity:

“They are detestable…”
(Titus 1:16)

A lot of things are detestable, Jesus…as are a lot of actions.

But this time You’re not talking about those.
You’re referring to detestable people.

There are those who insist all people are good

who from time-to-time slip up.

That’s true enough about good people.

But it misses the reality:

Some people aren’t good.
They’re bad to the bone and proud of it.

I beg You, LORD!
Help me see them coming a mile away.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“…he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.”
(Esther 2:17)

Interesting, Jesus.

You needed Esther on the throne to save Your people.
Vashti had to go.

You could have killed Vashti.

Instead, You let her take a moral stand

which she took and lost her throne
while keeping her dignity.

Was Vashti grateful?

Probably no more than I am when You do me a kindness
and I, heartbroken, view it as punishment.

Pray this Lazaroo with excuseless humility:

“Reflect on what I am saying…”
(2 Timothy 2:7)

Not a bad idea with anyone, Jesus.

The better attention I pay to what someone says

the greater my understanding of their words
and of the person who speaks them.

Which is why, when it comes to Your Word

reflection is not an option.
It’s essential.

I’ve got to understand what You’re saying to me.

But even more importantly

I long to know better and better
the One saying it.
