Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“…this not from yourselves…”
(Ephesians 2:8)

The good stuff never is, Jesus.

It’s always from You –
every last good thought, word and deed of it.

The junk, however, is all mine –
every last evil thought, bad word and foul deed of it.

Satan may be the source of the bad
but I’m the one fool enough to be duped by it.

I run to You, LORD, as fast as my wayward legs can carry me!

You…are my only Hope.

Pray this Lazaroo in humble love:

“Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us.”
(2 Samuel 2:14)

Seriously, Jesus?

Two of Your generals – Abner and Joab –

couldn’t figure out how to launch the war

so they chose this?

Why didn’t they fight each other?

Instead, they sent their most valiant fighters to their death

a sacrifice they were willing to make.

May I never ask others to make a sacrifice

I’m unwilling to make.

Pray this Lazaroo with earnest desire:

“All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor…”
(Galatians 2:10)

There are a lot of things that could have been asked of Paul, Jesus.

But only one thing?
This?

Before I assign more importance to it than I should

who are “they?”

Let’s see:

James…Peter…John – the pillars and leaders of Your Church in Jerusalem.

Oh.

If it was that big of a deal to them

it must be that big of a deal to You.

Pray this Lazaroo with catalytic dedication:

“The LORD…lifts the needy from the ash heap…”
(1 Samuel 2:7-8)

That’s where most of the world tosses the needy, Jesus:

on the ash heap.

And that’s where You are

to lift them up.

Did I say “them?”

Let me correct that:
To lift me up.

I, too, am needy.

Not so hungry as some
not without clothing or shelter

but I need You.

Every hour
I need You.

Without You, I can’t do this

or anything else.

Pray this Lazaroo in ardent love:

“…he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you…”
(2 Corinthians 2:5)

Paul actually cared more about how this man’s sin was affecting the whole church

than he did about how it was affecting him.

That’s the heart of an apostle…a pastor…a Christian.

At some point in our daily walk with You
we’ve got to transition from a life that’s all about

me

to a life that’s all about You

and Your precious people.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“…except for a short rest in the shelter.”
(Ruth 2:7)

I can’t work all the time, Jesus.

That’s not how You created me.

You made me in Your image

and You took a one-day-out-of-seven rest.

It’s instructive to note that Ruth took a short rest.

That’s all she – or I – need.

But it’s also important to remember

that she took advantage of a shelter
out from under the heat of the sun.

O God!

Will You be my Shelter?

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“My message and my preaching were not with wise…words…”
(1 Corinthians 2:4)

Well, that was totally unexpected, Jesus.

I would have thought as educated as he was
the Apostle Paul would have dropped pearls of wisdom on them

in every other sentence.

But he was no longer interested in impressing them

getting them to focus on himself.

He wasn’t trying to create followers of Paul.

He was all about one thing and one thing only:

pointing them to You.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“He sold them to their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.”
(Judges 2:14)

A strong enemy is hard enough to defeat, Jesus

impossible without Your help.

From the looks of it, Your people were successful

until they turned their backs on You
and lost their Protector.

That’s not something I ever want to do, LORD!

Not just because I can’t bear for my enemies to win
but because I long to stay close to You.

Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“They are full of envy…”
(Romans 1:29)

Not a particularly good thing to be full of, Jesus.

It’ll eat me alive.

When I start comparing myself with others

jealous of what You’re doing for them
I lose perspective, can’t think straight.

“Why them and not me?” has a boatload of really good answers –

none of which I can come up with
while I’m caught in envy’s grasp.

Instead of envy, fill me with gratitude

for what You’re doing for me.

Pray this Lazaroo in steadfast faith:

“But if you tell what we are doing…”
(Joshua 2:20)

It’s a scary thing to be at the mercy of what someone else knows, Jesus!

All they have to do is speak
and I’m done.

That’s the dilemma I’m in with You.

You know too much about me.

All the more terrifying

because You’re Prosecutor, Witness and Judge.

My only hope is my faith in what You did for me on the cross

which makes You

my Ultimate Defender.
