Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“Should it be said…”
(Micah 2:7)

Well…some things should be said, Jesus…

others not.

Much of the trouble I’ve endured over my lifetime

stems from getting those two mixed up.

Sometimes the need was there, along with the opening You provided

and I failed to speak up.

At other times…let’s just say it:

I should have kept my mouth shut.

Give me discernment in the moment, Holy Spirit!

with the courage to speak
or the self-control to shut up.

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“What I have vowed I will make good.”
(Jonah 2:9)

Easier said than done, Jesus.

At the time I make a vow
I’m fired up, determined.

But all that passion tends to fade.

That’s what Jonah ran into.

At first he was on fire!
Later on…not so much.

It’s the “later on” that separates the sheep from the goats, isn’t it?

I’ve been a goat too many times in my life, LORD!

Please. By Your grace:

Not this time.

Pray this Lazaroo in utterly submissive confidence:

“…people from the foothills will possess the land of the Philistines.”
(Obadiah 1:19)

That can’t happen, Jesus!

It can’t.

People way down here

cannot defeat a vastly superior foe way up there.

Not in a million-million years.

Not unless You decide to make it happen.

So here am I, LORD, way down in the foothills.

There’s no way in a million-million years
I can ever do anything that will shake this world for You

unless You

make it happen.

Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground when no bait is there?”
(Amos 3:5)

No, Jesus.

Birds aren’t that stupid.

But we Your people sometimes are.

Even though You’ve warned us repeatedly of the dangers of sin
we keep swooping down into Satan’s traps.

Your Word is full of advice, cautions, horrific accounts

but it’s as though we ignore all the signs:

STOP!
DANGER!
BRIDGE OUT!

because we think we know better than do You.

Pray this Lazaroo with bulldog faith:

“They all march in line…”
(Joel 2:7)

It’s bad enough when my enemies show up one at a time, Jesus.

But when a horde of them lines up against me?

Not good.

Of course, this was a plague of locusts sent by You

against Your chronically rebellious people.

So as long as I stay obedient to You

I won’t have to face that fearsome sight.

Or if I do, I can remain confident

knowing You will surely rescue me.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“…you must not be a prostitute…”
(Hosea 3:3)

Well, duh, Jesus.

That’s kind of a standing rule, isn’t it?

Why would Hosea say this to his wife?

It was because You told him to take her back, wasn’t it?
Even though she’d been unfaithful to him.

Broken laws need to be restated.

Am I in violation of any of Your commands, LORD?
If so, please tell me again

and in Your great mercy
give me another chance to obey.

Pray this Lazaroo with full-on ardor:

“To the one who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life…”
(Revelation 2:7)

What more incentive could I possibly need, Jesus?

I’ve got some things to overcome, in 2018.

Some of them are new challenges.
But others are as old as I am.

The new ones are a handful, but the old ones?

Those are scariest of all.

After all this time, they’re still here.

But so are You.

This is the year.

Pray this Lazaroo with a listening ear:

“O God of my fathers…you have made known to me what we asked of you…”
(Daniel 2:23)

That doesn’t always happen, Jesus.

Sometimes You don’t answer my question
because I can’t handle the answer.

Sometimes You answer at the perfect moment
but I’ve quit listening.

And of course, there are times when I’m asking the wrong question.

If You were to answer me
I’d head off in the wrong direction.

But help me remember:

You always have the answer.

Pray this Lazaroo with desperate desire:

“I will make your forehead like the hardest stone, harder than flint.”
(Ezekiel 3:9)

Good for ramming Your unseen enemies, Jesus.

This is no game.
Not some tea party.

This no-holds-barred war against the enemy of my soul

is a brutal battle to the death.

It’s bloody. Fierce. Unbelievably hard.

It takes everything I’ve got
till I face the fact
that what I’ve got
isn’t enough.

I need You, LORD!

I’ve got to
got to
got to have You!
