Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“…they realized they were naked; so they sowed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”
(Genesis 3:7)

That’s what happens every time I sin, Jesus.

First the shame
then the cover-up.

Sin must be covered

because it’s so foul!

I could attempt to cover my sin

with lies, excuses, misdirection
trying to change the subject –

all for naught.

The only way sin can ever be covered

is by sincere repentance
trusting in Your shed blood on the cross.

Pray this Lazaroo in holy fear:

“So I have caused you to be…humiliated…”
(Malachi 2:9)

No one can do a better job of that than You, Jesus.

When others try to humiliate me, they fail –
unless they have Your go-ahead.

They don’t know me well enough to thoroughly humiliate me.

But You do.

If I mistake Your blessings to suppose that I’m better than everyone else

You can diminish me to a speck of dirt
faster than I can pound my chest a second time.

Pray this Lazaroo in sober contemplation:

“…their slaves will plunder them.”
(Zechariah 2:9)

Well, now…

wouldn’t that be a stunning comeuppance, Jesus!

But it’s happened.

And it’ll happen again.

Those I’ve ruled over

can absolutely end up ruling over me.

The only way to avoid that is to be the kind of person You want me to be

when I’m on top.

At the very least, I’ll be sowing the kind of good seed I’ll long to reap

if I ever end up on bottom.

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“I struck all the work of your hands with…mildew…”
(Haggai 2:17)

I hate mildew, Jesus –

that smelly, fungal invasion that leaches onto
my clothing, leather, paper – even the ceilings, walls and floors
of my home.

Mildew forms in dank, dark places, hidden away from fresh air and sunlight.

O God! Bring the fresh air of Your Word into my life.

And may the cleansing radiance of Your sun shine

…on every pocket of infestation
that needs to be eradicated.

Pray this Lazaroo with utter abandon:

“Gather together, gather together…”
(Zephaniah 2:10)

When You say it once, I’ve got to pay attention and obey, Jesus.

But when You say it twice?

Whew! I need to get out my highlighter
and bump it up to the top of my agenda.

What are You saying to me through Your prophet Zephaniah?

They quit turning to You for counsel, direction and help, didn’t they? –
turning instead to others they trusted more.

Message received and recorded.
Loud and clear.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Then you will become their victim.”
(Habakkuk 2:7)

We all believe we’re better off than some people, Jesus.

But just because that’s true today
doesn’t mean it will always be so.

You raise up those who are low

and humble those You’ve lifted so high
that they’ve become proud and arrogant
convinced of their superiority.

Next time You bless me, LORD

help me be humbled
by the knowledge that it’s Your loving, merciful grace

and not what I deserve.

Take warning as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The metal on the chariots flashes…”
(Nahum 2:3)

It’s happening in broad daylight, Jesus

and there’s not one thing the Ninevites can do about it.
This punishment is from You.

Why?

It was their cruelty, wasn’t it?
their witchcraft and prostitution.

You sent your prophet Jonah to warn them.

They listened! Repented!
You relented.

But after You showed them kindness

they went right back to it.

O God!

May I never repeat their mistake
in response to Your grace.

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“Does [the LORD] do such things?”
(Micah 2:7)

Unbelieving people accuse You of doing so much wrong, Jesus.

But is that what You do?

No!

Because it’s not who You are.

Do You punish wrong? Yes –

though not as our sins deserve.

Are You unfair in Your judgments? Absolutely not.

Instead, just the opposite – You are uncomprehendingly merciful.

Is there an eternal hell that awaits all evildoers? Certainly –

along with an eternal, glorious heaven
for every sinner who repents.

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit:

“…the LORD commanded the fish…”
(Jonah 2:10)

…and he did exactly what You told him to, Jesus.

If a fish can do what You command

why can’t I?

Oh, I do…most of the time.

But I have some things I need to work on, don’t I?

Some might argue that a fish is too stupid to do anything other than what he’s told.

O God! Help me attain that level of stupidity!

It’s embarrassing to be upstaged by a fish.

Take warning, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“They will occupy the fields of Ephraim…”
(Obadiah 1:19)

Ephraim was Joseph’s second son, Jesus.

When Jacob blessed his two grandsons
he put Ephraim ahead of his older brother Manasseh.

His descendants became one of Your 12 tribes of Israel.

But in the Promised Land
they failed to dislodge those worshipping idols
and became idol-worshippers themselves.

Who are those I need to dislodge from my life, Father?

before I follow their evil ways
and lose my fields to others?
