Pray this Lazaroo in unadulterated love:

“…they…flatter others for their own advantage.”
(Jude 1:16)

Pretty much everybody enjoys a compliment, Jesus

so long as it’s sincere
from the heart
no strings attached.

But nobody appreciates being insincerely buttered up

by a person who’s scheming
to get something from them in return.

I’m happy to be used to benefit others

but I despise being manipulated.

Help me be the kind of person

who wholeheartedly encourages others for their sake
without attempting to ingratiate myself with them.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“May the glory of the LORD be praised in his dwelling place!”
(Ezekiel 3:12)

I cannot begin to comprehend the magnitude of this praise, Jesus.

Oh, to be there in heaven among countless throngs of angels
singing with voices far surpassing any choir on earth

in impossibly close, perfect, thousands-part harmony
rendering gorgeous notes inconceivable

to the unaided human ear

in all the languages of earth and heaven
with depth of meaning so rich
that my heart bursts in adoration.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“…receiving no help from the pagans.”
(3 John 1:7)

Is this a big ol’ surprise, Jesus?

No.
Hardly.

Pagans aren’t in the habit of helping me – or any of Your followers.

In fact, just the opposite.

They tend to get in our way

quite frequently opposing us.

So, receiving no help from the pagans

is no excuse for not being about Your business –

the business of sharing Your gospel with pagans

and being of eternal help to them.

Pray this Lazaroo in abject humility:

“…deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my sins.”
(Lamentations 1:22)

There are two ways to pray that prayer, Jesus.

Jeremiah was asking You to punish his enemies for their sins
as brutally as You had punished him for his.

But there’s another way to pray it for those of us who aren’t as worthy as Jeremiah:

Deal with my enemies’ sins as lovingly and forgivingly
as You have dealt with mine.

So be it.

Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.”
(2 John 1:6)

We’re not to obey everything, are we, Jesus?

Obedience – all by itself – is not the goal.

There are countless people issuing orders in my direction –

presidents, governors, mayors, bosses, doctors, experts, friends, family.

When should I obey them?

When their orders are in harmony with Your commands.

When should I wisely but staunchly disobey them?

When doing so would require me to disobey You.

Pray this Lazaroo in Holy Fear:

“…you said, ‘I will not serve you!’”
(Jeremiah 2:20)

What a foolhardy, terrifying declaration, Jesus.
Most of us aren’t that blatant with our defiance.

We give you lip service that makes us sound righteous
until our disobedient actions reveal our words to be lies.

That’s not my intent, LORD!

I know I’ve overpromised and underperformed.
But every time I promise You something I mean it.

Please help me overcome my weakness!
I so long to obey You.
Every time.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“…comes…from the world.”
(1 John 2:16)

The source matters, Jesus.

If it comes from You, I can trust it.
If it comes from the world, I can’t.

When I read or hear anything

I’ve got to run it through the test of Your Word.
If it flunks the test, I’ve got to reject it.

No matter how attractive
no matter how successful the person who said it

it’s poison.

If I swallow it
its acid will eat me alive.

Pray this Lazaroo with enlightened awareness:

“The LORD Almighty has a day in store…for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled)…”
(Isaiah 2:12)

It’s easy to be envious of those who are being exalted, Jesus.

When we’re the ones being exalted
we rejoice at our good fortune.

But it’s not only bad people who will be humbled.

You’re saying every single person You’ve exalted
will also be humbled.

So when you lift me up, I need to understand:

Healthy humbling…

is on the way.

Pray this Lazaroo with sold-out surrender:

“…their destruction has not been sleeping.”
(2 Peter 2:3)

But it feels like that, doesn’t it, Jesus?

When somebody who doesn’t believe in You does wrong
they look around and think –

“How about that! I got away with it!”

Of course, they didn’t.
If they don’t repent, their punishment is guaranteed to arrive

in Your perfect way and time.

I, on the other hand, know better.

When I sin, I’m filled with remorse.

I’m driven to repent
and make it right.

Pray this Lazaroo from a tender heart:

“turn, my lover…”
(Song of Songs 2:17)

Solomon’s bride wants him to turn toward her and love her, Jesus

just as You call us to turn away
from those things that distract us from loving You.

How can I show You my love today?

Certainly, what I’m doing right now, is one way.
So is reading, studying, obeying Your Word in my life.

But it also includes helping others
and sharing Your good news of salvation with the lost.
