Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“…Jesus Christ…will be with us…”
(2 John 1:3)

That’s what I have to know, Jesus –

that You’ll be with me.

I’m aware that’s backwards.

I’m the one who’s supposed to be following You.

And I am.
Imperfectly.

Which is why I need reassurance
when I mess up.

Because it’s when I’m outnumbered, overwhelmed, flat-out scared

that I have to be confident You’ll never leave me alone.

But that’s the secret, isn’t it?

You’re with me
when I’m with You.

Pray this Lazaroo in lesson-learning horror:

“Why then has he become plunder?”
(Jeremiah 2:14)

Before I try to answer that question, Jesus

I need to ponder what it is to be plunder.

It’s what raiders get when they destroy a city

looting whatever’s left after killing all its inhabitants
having burned it to the ground.

I don’t want to be my enemies’ stolen goods, Father!

To avoid that, it’s essential that I obey You.

I long to remain Your child, Your treasured possession

now…and forever.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“I write to you…”
(1 John 2:12)

John wrote to them, Jesus

and 2000 years later
he’s writing to me.

It’s as fresh to me in the 21st Century
as it was to them in the first.

That’s exactly the way You designed it

because what John wrote is Your Word
and Your Word is eternal

transformative not only for those living 6,000 years ago

or in the first century

but also for me –

and all who come after.

Pray this Lazaroo in chastened repentance:

“…your people…clasp hands with pagans.”
(Isaiah 2:6)

I guess there are worse things to say about us, Jesus

but not much.

You’ve set us apart

to be examples to those who so desperately need You.

How can they be drawn to You

when they observe our lives
and see no difference?

We aren’t better than they

but You desire to so shine through us
that they see the beautiful things You do

and like us
choose to follow You.

Pray this Lazaroo in deep assurance:

“… prophets, though human, spoke from God…”
(2 Peter 1:21)

It doesn’t get much more amazing, Jesus –

that instead of doing everything Yourself
You work through people
like me.

The fact is, You’d do a much better job without us

but You love us!

You want to see us grow and develop into Your likeness

which requires some serious work on our part
and Yours. 😉

How patient You have to be!

Thank You so much
for including me.

Pray this Lazaroo with eyes that see:

“…my beautiful one…”
(Song of Songs 2:13)

I’ve been told, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” Jesus

but ultimately there’s only One who beholds:

You.

The rest of us don’t really see – not the way You do.

We focus on the wrong things
ignore, overlook, misunderstand the right things.

There’s so much more to each person You’ve created

than we can see.

O God!

Open the eyes of my heart.

Enable me to see
what You see.

Pray this Lazaroo in awe:

“Through him you believe in God…”
(1 Peter 1:21)

Thank You, Jesus!

for enabling me to believe.

There’s a fundamental difference between belief in God

and believing in a god.

For millennia, people have believed in a god – or gods.

How could they not?

Any rational, intelligent, observant person

can ascertain that there is more to existence
than nature or human effort can explain.

But it is You

who point us to Your heavenly Father
the only true God.

Pray this Lazaroo with transparency:

“I said in my heart…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

If I say it in my heart

that’s where it counts, Jesus –
the place where only You can see.

Some of the things I say with my lips

don’t really reflect what’s in my heart.

I don’t mean to be a hypocrite.

I don’t want to be a person
who pretends to be someone I’m not.

But not everything that’s in my heart

is safe to say out loud
or wise.

Pray this Lazaroo in the love of God:

“Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes…”
(James 2:2)

So how do I treat him, Jesus?

Do I rush over and fawn all over him?

I hope not.
So do You.

If he’s worth as much as the ring on his finger

he hopes not, too.

But You do want me to go over and show him Your love

not because of his appearance
but because that’s what he so desperately needs.

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“…you will walk in the ways of the good…”
(Proverbs 2:20)

That’s my desire, Jesus!

to walk in the ways of the good.

There are a lot of evil people out there

the worst of whom only pretend to be good.

But You’ve always had men, women, young people

who love You with all their hearts
who want with everything in them to please You.

They aren’t perfect.

Neither am I.

But in Your strength

we’re giving it all we’ve got.
