Pray this Lazaroo with undying love:

“…you continue…”
(3 John 1:3)

Many people start, Jesus.

Few continue.

Continuing requires character.

It means I keep going no matter what.
It means I stay the course in spite of how I feel.

It means I set my jaw and refuse to be pushed off track

even when it appears what I’m doing
isn’t going to pay off.

To continue requires not only everything I’ve got

but forces me to lean on You
every moment of the day.

Pray this Lazaroo in humbled zeal:

“My priests and my elders perished…”
(Lamentations 1:19)

Your leaders aren’t exempt, are they, Jesus?

In fact, You expect more of them.

You warn those who think they want to hold high office in Your kingdom

that there’s a cost –
one they might not want to pay.

Besides, being a point person in Your Church doesn’t make me a boss.

You’re very clear about that.

To be the greatest

I must become the very least
the servant of all.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“…from Jesus Christ…”
(2 John 1:3)

I’ll take anything that comes from You, Jesus!

Anything.

You do all things well. Make that: perfectly.

You’re generous beyond all measure.
You’re the Giver of every good gift.

I know.

That includes some things I won’t like.
At the time.

But I trust You!

I know that anything You do to me or require of me that is hard, distasteful or even heartbreaking

is not only for Your good
but for mine.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“My people…have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
(Jeremiah 2:13)

What an exercise in futility, Jesus!

Digging a cistern is hard, back-breaking work.

To expend all that time and effort to dig one that can’t hold water?

Crushing.

Is there anything I’m working on right now that You know will turn out to be a broken cistern?

I’d really appreciate a heads up.

All I want to do
is what You want me to do.

Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“…whoever hates his brother…does not know where he is going…”
(1 John 2:11)

I think I know where I’m going, Jesus

but I don’t.

Hopefully, the reason is not that I hate my brother!

The reason is
I’m not that smart.

Only You know the future.

How many times have I started my day
thinking I knew what I was going to do

only to have someone or something
throw a monkey wrench into my plans for the day?

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“…your people…are full of superstitions…”
(Isaiah 2:6)

It must be so hard for You to bear, Jesus –

seeing Your people hamstrung by their superstitions.

At first, they seem harmless enough –

knocking on wood
not walking under ladders
avoiding black cats who want to stroll in front of us
wearing the same socks we wore when our team last won –

but at heart, they have a deceiving, ugly, hidden danger:

They’re little false gods I trust
instead of You.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.”
(2 Peter 1:20)

I get it, Jesus.

It’s above all because everything hinges on this truth:

These are Your words, not those of any human being.

Even well-intentioned people make mistakes.

You don’t.

I can stake my life on everything I read in these 66 books of the Bible

from Genesis to Revelation

because every truth I encounter

is Yours.

Pray this Lazaroo in confident belief:

“Arise…”
(Song of Songs 2:13)

That’s what You did for the world and for me, Jesus:

You arose.

Because You did

I will.

That takes the stinger out of the wasp of death!

To know that death is not the end
but the beginning

is the greatest gift of my life:

Life.

Eternal life!

My body may be buried here

but my spirit will soar forever with You in heaven
to be joined one day by my transformed body.

Pray this Lazaroo with sold-out surrender:

“He was…revealed in these last times…”
(1 Peter 1:20)

For nearly two thousand years we’ve celebrated Your coming, Jesus!

All of history – and all our hopes –
hinge on the perfect timing of Your arrival.

Before You came, we faced the fact
that try though we might
we could not save ourselves.

Now that You’ve come
we fall on our faces in gratitude
because we don’t have to save ourselves.

That’s what You did on the cross

for all who believe.
