Pray this Lazaroo in holy fear:

“…they will walk like blind men…”
(Zephaniah 1:17)

You didn’t say they were blind, Jesus –

You said they’d walk like blind men.

They’d have their eyes wide open

and still stumble
walking face-first into immovable walls.

They’d claim they were able to see

but grope along fearfully, hesitantly, without confidence.

Blind people do pretty well in familiar surroundings.

It’s the new that presents their greatest challenge

as it does me.

Open my eyes, LORD!

I trust only in You.

Pray this Lazaroo in holy caution:

“…like death [he] is never satisfied…”
(Habakkuk 2:5)

What a scary place to be, Jesus!

No matter how much success he enjoyed
it would never be enough.

No matter how much money he made
he would always crave more.

No matter how much love he received
he would never feel loved enough.

May that never be said of me!

May it never be true of me.

Teach me to be full, happy, content

with the blessings You’ve showered upon me.

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“An attacker advances against you, Nineveh…”
(Nahum 2:1)

Was Nineveh afraid, Jesus?

Maybe not.
Nineveh was a strong, confident, important city.

Besides, they had escaped destruction once before when You sent Jonah to warn them.

They humbled themselves, repented
and You relented.

But they didn’t, this time, did they?

Forewarned is forearmed
only when the warning is heeded.

You’ve warned me in the past, LORD.

I paid attention, straightened up
and You spared me.

Keep me paying attention!

every time.

Pray this Lazaroo in humbled gratitude:

“…they will taunt you with this mournful song…”
(Micah 2:4)

O Jesus!

I know what it is to be taunted to my face
though most of the time, I suspect

the slams, put-downs and harsh judgments
happen behind my back.

But to be taunted in a song?

one written specifically to publicly ridicule me?

That kind of thing happens among children on the playground

but because some so-called “adults” never grow up
thank You for sparing me that.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“But you brought my life up from the pit…”
(Jonah 2:6)

That’s Your specialty, Jesus –

bringing my life up from the pit –

perhaps because that’s where I’ve spent way too much of my life.

Sometimes I knew exactly where I was
down, hurting, defeated, depressed.

At other times – blind as a bat –
I thought I was on the mountaintop

when in reality, I was mired even deeper in the pit.

But You! In Love! Every time!

lift me out.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“…the house of Jacob will possess its inheritance.”
(Obadiah 1:17)

That’s an easy distinction to overlook, Jesus.

It’s one thing to be left an inheritance
another thing to possess it.

The promise of an inheritance is beautiful, motivating, comforting

but if it doesn’t pan out
it’s devastating.

You’ve promised me an unimaginably great inheritance in heaven

which is mine by faith.

My faith, however

is confirmed by my obedience.

Last time I checked

faith without deeds is dead.

Pray this Lazaroo in sobered awareness:

“‘Even the bravest warriors will flee naked on that day,’ declares the LORD.”
(Amos 2:16)

Now, there’s a graphic image, Jesus.

You have a way of making Your warnings memorable
and crystal clear.

If only this prophecy was intended for the enemies of Your people!

But it wasn’t.

This was the pronouncement of Your judgment on Israel

Your chosen people
the descendants of Abraham.

My takeaway?

If I’m doing any sinning
this would be an outstanding time

to cut it out.

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit:

“They have the appearance of horses…”
(Joel 2:4)

I can see the resemblance between a horse and a locust, Jesus…

sort of…
if I squint.

But these weren’t normal locusts, were they?

You sent them to strip away every blade of vegetation
growing in the land of Your people.

As Creator, all power is Yours.

You had the ability to give these locusts
any appearance You wished

and You exercised it.

May I never anger You as they did.

Fall on your face in gratitude, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one.’”
(Hosea 2:23)

I don’t know if You’ve ever called me that, Jesus –

“Not my loved one.”

If I understand correctly

You’ve loved me since before I was born.

Although I will say this:

based on my sins too many to count
that’s the name I deserve.

But praise Your precious, holy, loving, merciful, forgiving, sin-eradicating Name!

You haven’t
don’t
won’t

treat me as my sins deserve.

Beg God for His strength, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name and have not grown weary.”
(Revelation 2:3)

You’ll never say those words to me, Jesus.

Oh, maybe the perseverance part.
Through it all…I’m still here.

And the part about enduring hardships?
Yup. I’ve seen a few.

But that part about not growing weary?

I flunk.

Some days I catch myself whining and complaining about what’s going on

forgetting that You
are what’s going on.

Forgive me, Father!
