Pray this Lazaroo in chastened acknowledgment:

“She also gave some to her husband…and he ate it.”
(Genesis 3:6)

Which of them can I blame for committing the first sin, Jesus?

Was it Eve?

After all, she bit first.

Was it Adam?

You created him first.
He should have known better.

Or was it the serpent?

Because nobody was sinning until he showed up.

The answer has to be: “All of the above.”

Each of them is fully responsible for their disobedient actions

as am I.

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“…you…by your teaching have caused many to stumble…”
(Malachi 2:8)

Teachers are so important – to every one of us, Jesus!

But if teachers can’t be trusted…

if they twist the knowledge they share
if they mislead the trusting, the naïve, the ignorant

everyone who sits under them
is at risk.

True, those who blindly follow their teachers share the blame.

But the teacher who deliberately sticks out a foot to trip them
is at the greatest risk of all.

Pray this Lazaroo with utter abandon:

“…he has…sent me against the nations that have plundered you…”
(Zechariah 2:8)

I love knowing this about You, Jesus –

that You send Your mighty angel
against those who have attacked Your people.

As I think back about it, that explains a lot.

Wow.

Some will look at what has happened to them as mere coincidence.

I know better.

You watch. You listen. You know.

When someone comes after us, You don’t just take note.
You do something about it.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.”
(Haggai 2:16)

No expectation is more false, Jesus

than when we think we can thumb our noses at You
without consequences.

What throws us off is Your patience with us.

You seldom punish us right away, as we so richly deserve.
You give us time – so much time! –

to repent and turn it around.

How much better to go expecting 50 measures

and find 1000.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“…on the day of the LORD’s wrath…the whole world will be consumed…”
(Zephaniah 1:18)

As terrifying as that day will be, Jesus

it’s Your right.

You’re the Creator of everything. You put us here.

You can take us out.

In fact, in light of our inexcusable, outrageous behavior

it’s only because of Your great mercy
that You haven’t done it already.

I know You’re the God of the second-googolth chance.

But one day
the last chance will run out.

Pray this Lazaroo in deepest gratitude:

“Will not your debtors suddenly arise?”
(Habakkuk 2:7)

Not much fun, Jesus.

Unless…

Right now I’m thinking of my debt to my parents.

Without them, I wouldn’t be here.

Then there are those who’ve taught me what I needed to learn.

They equipped me with the tools I’m using now.

The person who led me to You

will always have a special place in my heart.

But I owe You the most

because all the above
came from You.

Cling to the promise of God, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob…though destroyers…have ruined their vines.”
(Nahum 2:3)

It takes years for a grapevine to mature to the point where it produces truly great grapes, Jesus.

The grape grower invests hours in pruning and training the vine
so it pours all its lifeforce into creating great-tasting grapes
rather than growing big and bushy with stems and leaves.

O God!

Is that what You’re doing with me?

Please.
Whatever it takes.
Restore my splendor.

Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…disgrace will not overtake us.”
(Micah 2:6)

Those sound a lot like famous last words, Jesus.

None of us knows what the future holds.

In this case, they couldn’t have been more wrong.

Your prophets had warned them of the disaster that was coming
if they refused to change their ways and follow You.

But they were unwilling to listen.

No, I don’t know what my future holds.

But of this much I’m certain:

I know Who holds my future.

Pray this Lazaroo with bulldog faith:

“But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you.”
(Jonah 2:9)

Thank You for putting a song of thanksgiving in my heart, Jesus!

Of course, there are days
when I have trouble remembering where You put it

let alone being able to sing it.

But it’s in there. By faith, I declare it:

It’s in there!

You sacrificed Your life for me.

It is my joy to sacrifice whatever You have entrusted to my care

for You.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“People from the Negev will occupy the mountains of Esau…”
(Obadiah 1:19)

When people living in the desert are able to capture mountain fortresses

it’s Your doing, Jesus.

Isaac’s twin sons Jacob and Esau didn’t get along very well –

especially after Jacob stole Esau’s blessing and birthright.

Even though the boys made up later in life

Esau’s descendants took out their anger on Jacob’s
…and triggered Yours.

Help me get over past hurts, Father!

so I can enjoy Your blessings.
