Pray this Lazaroo with transparency:

“I said in my heart…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

If I say it in my heart

that’s where it counts, Jesus –
the place where only You can see.

Some of the things I say with my lips

don’t really reflect what’s in my heart.

I don’t mean to be a hypocrite.

I don’t want to be a person
who pretends to be someone I’m not.

But not everything that’s in my heart

is safe to say out loud
or wise.

Pray this Lazaroo in the love of God:

“Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes…”
(James 2:2)

So how do I treat him, Jesus?

Do I rush over and fawn all over him?

I hope not.
So do You.

If he’s worth as much as the ring on his finger

he hopes not, too.

But You do want me to go over and show him Your love

not because of his appearance
but because that’s what he so desperately needs.

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“…you will walk in the ways of the good…”
(Proverbs 2:20)

That’s my desire, Jesus!

to walk in the ways of the good.

There are a lot of evil people out there

the worst of whom only pretend to be good.

But You’ve always had men, women, young people

who love You with all their hearts
who want with everything in them to please You.

They aren’t perfect.

Neither am I.

But in Your strength

we’re giving it all we’ve got.

Pray this Lazaroo in heartfelt gratitude:

“…he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a…faithful high priest…”
(Hebrews 2:17)

It’s a high honor to be high priest, Jesus.

Only a handful have served in that holy office.

Not all high priests have served well.

Some of them were swayed by jealousy, politics, pride.

Thank You for those who served conscientiously!

But there’s only One perfectly faithful High Priest –
the One who serves this day and forever:

You.

Pray this Lazaroo without illusion:

“Not a word from their mouth can be trusted…”
(Psalms 5:9)

Some people believe everyone is good at heart, Jesus.

If only that were true!

But it isn’t.

Some people are bad to the bone.

They refuse to do right
resisting every effort to help them turn around.

They take delight
in doing what You abhor.

They’re never happier

than when they’re harming one of Your people
or leading one more gullible person astray.

Keep them away from me!

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“I will pay it back…”
(Philemon 1:19)

That was a generous offer, Jesus

seeing as how it was a debt Paul didn’t owe.

It takes love to pay off someone else’s debt –

especially when the cost is great.

You should know

since that’s what You did on the cross for me.

Help me remember that incredible gift

next time I’m tempted to demand payment in full
from somebody who owes me.

Freely I’ve received

freely You expect me to give.

Pray this Lazaroo in forgiving awareness:

“I would be asleep and at rest…”
(Job 3:13)

Job thinks that’s what being dead is like, Jesus.

He also thinks it’s better than being alive right now.

Plagued by the loss of his family, health, reputation, fortune

unconsciousness seems preferable.

Of course, that’s not what death is.

Even Job knew that!

But when we’re in pain

most of us tend to say things we don’t mean.

Help me remember that

next time someone goes off on me.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“They are…unfit…”
(Titus 1:16)

My first glance at these unfit people

tempts me to look down on them, Jesus.

Until it hits me: “Unfit?”

So am I.

I’m unfit to receive Your salvation

unfit to be given this much
unfit to be so blessed by You
unfit to be the bearer of Your good news.

And yet

all of these – and so much more! –
are mine.

How dare I look down on anybody?

when I’m the one
who’s unfit.

Pray this Lazaroo with joy:

“He proclaimed a holiday…”
(Esther 2:18)

Well good for him, Jesus!

Kings have the power to do that.

I, on the other hand, can’t just up and declare one of those

no matter how badly I need it.

Wait a minute.

You’re King of kings and LORD of lords.

I’m more than a subject in Your kingdom
I’m Your dearly loved child.

So when You see that I really need a holiday

I know somehow, someway
You’ll proclaim it.
