Pray this Lazaroo, in awe:

“God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.”
(Exodus 3:14)

If anyone else said that by way of introduction, Jesus

it would seem rude.

But when Moses asked Your Name

that’s what You had to tell Him.

What else could You say?

You’re not like anyone else!

Everyone else – in one way or other – is like You.

You made us in Your Image.

Having said that…

I’d like to look a lot more like You

than I do.

Pray this Lazaroo in sudden awareness:

“…refusing to be comforted…”
(Matthew 2:18)

When the pain is that great, Jesus…

only then does someone refuse to be comforted.

It’s hard on their friends and family, who desperately want to help.

But far harder on the one who grieves.

The words, gestures, offers to “let me know if you need anything”

are not only useless

they’re offensive –

as if such things could somehow lessen the agony.

Is that how You felt, Father

when they crucified Your Son?

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“She also gave some to her husband…”
(Genesis 3:6)

It’s seldom enough to sin all by ourselves, is it, Jesus?

We have to entice others to sin
so we don’t feel so all alone.

We can attempt to fool ourselves into believing if others do it too

it’s not so bad.

But it still is.

And the punishment for those who drag others down with them
is worse.

Of course, there’s an alternative:

Don’t sin in the first place.

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intensity:

“…he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty.”
(Malachi 2:7)

What a privilege, Jesus!

…and what an awesome responsibility.

To be one whose job it is to share Your truth with others

is a glorious, fearsome calling.

Once that was the task You assigned to Your priests, Your prophets

but today…on this side of the cross…

no longer just them.

That glad pleasure…that terrifying mission…

has been given to every one
of those who by faith follow You

including me.

Pray this Lazaroo in triumphant humility:

“…he has…sent me against the nations that have plundered you…”
(Zechariah 2:8)

That’s all I need to know, Jesus.

There will come a day when You will send Your mighty angel

to right the wrongs
to pay back evildoers
to make sure justice is served
to avenge me of my adversaries.

Of course, I don’t want that angel to visit me!

So I need to be sure that whatever wrongs I’ve committed
are confessed, repented of, forsaken, under Your blood.

Pray this Lazaroo in awe:

“…before one stone was laid on another in the LORD’S temple.”
(Haggai 2:15)

I’m thinking of a stonemason who’s built a hundred buildings, Jesus

but never one like this.

Your temple!

The place dedicated to You, to Your glory
the sacred heart of Israel where You chose to dwell.

Would that stonemason have trembled as he picked up his first stone?

Do I…

as I prepare to offer my service

to the one and only
God of the ages?

Pray this Lazaroo in holy fear:

“In the fire of his jealousy…”
(Zephaniah 1:18)

I know You’re loving, Jesus.

Your kindness, mercy, forgiveness are legendary.

But that doesn’t mean You’re weak.

You hate sin.
You especially hate premeditated, willful sin.

Most of all, You hate what it signifies

when those You’ve loved, cared for, forgiven countless times

forsake You and run after Satan.

It ignites a fire of jealousy in You that will consume all

who cynically believe they can take advantage of Your goodness.

Examine yourself, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Woe to him who…makes himself wealthy by extortion!”
(Habakkuk 2:6)

Extortion, Jesus

threatening to harm someone
unless they pay what I demand.

You hate that.

So would I…
if it were done to me.

But there’s more than one way to threaten someone

nor does everything I want have to do with money.

At heart, the sin of extortion is the belief that I have to threaten to harm others

instead of trusting You to provide what I need.

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel…”
(Nahum 2:2)

Well, now, Jesus…

that’s some serious splendor.

There was a day when Israel was the greatest nation on earth

envied by all who trembled in her shadow.

No longer.

Her sins have reduced her to a mere wisp
of what she used to be

as will my sins do to me

unless I forsake them, repent
and return with all my heart to You.

Pray this Lazaroo with Scriptural discernment:

“‘Do not prophesy,’ their prophets say.”
(Micah 2:6)

No false prophet wants to hear what one of Your prophets has to say, Jesus.

When Your prophets speak
false prophets are in danger of being exposed.

False prophets thrive on speculation, misinformation, manipulation, obfuscation.

Your prophets love, honor and worship You

which makes them lovers of the truth
the whole truth
nothing but the truth.

They don’t care who tells them to shut up.

They can’t.
They won’t.

Not ever.
