Pray this Lazaroo with explosive feeling:

“When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah though not with Absalom, he fled to the tent of the Lord and took hold of the horns of the altar.”
(1 Kings 2:28)

When he sided with David against Absalom, Jesus

Joab chose well the first time.

But when he threw in his lot with Adonijah against Solomon

that was his undoing.

What was his mistake?

Depending on his own calculations
instead of checking to see who You had chosen.

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“So King Solomon gave orders to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he struck down Adonijah and he died.”
(1 Kings 2:25)

Adonijah was Solomon’s brother, Jesus

but for his conniving attempt to overthrow his younger brother –

whom You anointed king –

he paid with his life.

The first time Adonijah proclaimed himself king

Solomon warned him never to pull a stunt like that again.

But in Adonijah’s case
forewarned was not forearned.

Dear LORD:

Help me learn from this hard example!

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“Adonijah shall be put to death today!”
(1 Kings 2:24)

He just couldn’t leave it alone, could he, Jesus?

Adonijah wanted to be king.
He was the son of David.

As far as he was concerned
Absalom’s death meant he was next in line.

There was just one problem with his plan:

You had chosen Solomon to be king.

The way I reason everything out has no bearing whatsoever, does it?

Your wise, all-knowing will is the only thing that matters.

Pray this Lazaroo with undiluted sincerity:

“And now, as surely as the LORD lives –”
(I Kings 2:24)

Those are strong words, Jesus.

Solomon was determined to put his brother Adonijah to death
that very day –

which he did.

But unless You’re the one who puts those words in my mouth

I don’t plan to ever speak them.

You live!

There is nothing more certain or more sacred
than that overriding, glorious, awe-inspiring truth.

My intentions – no matter how fervent –

will always pale in comparison.

Pray this Lazaroo in loving, eternal gratitude:

“…pay with his life for this…”
(1 Kings 2:23)

That’s what Adonijah had to do, Jesus

and that’s what was required of me.

I’ve sinned against You.

Not once or twice, but repeatedly.

My life!

That’s the pronounced sentence
for willfully defying Your loving commands.

I was imprisoned on death row

until You stepped into my cell
and took my place.

You let them kill You instead of me

so that I
utterly guilty
without excuse

could go free.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“You might as well request the kingdom for him…”
(1 Kings 2:22)

All Adonijah asked was to marry this woman, Jesus.

But Solomon knew better.

With that key move

his brother could succeed in overthrowing him.

Like Satan!

He tempts me to compromise in an area that seems harmless
but what he’s doing is getting a toe in the door

then a foot
followed by a leg
until he’s completely inside

intent on overthrowing Your kingdom in my life.

Fully open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“‘Very well,’ Bathsheba replied, ‘I will speak to the king for you.’”
(1 Kings 2:18)

Bathsheba was naïve, trusting, politically inexperienced, Jesus

She took the conniving Adonijah at his word

not knowing that if her son Solomon had granted his brother’s request

she and her son would soon be dead.

I want to take people at face value, Father…but I’ve learned the hard way

that isn’t always possible

O Holy Spirit:

Grant me Your priceless gift of discernment!

Pray this Lazaroo with Godly discernment:

“Please ask King Solomon – he will not refuse you – “
(1 Kings 2:17)

That should have been Bathsheba’s first clue, Jesus:

Something about Adonijah’s request didn’t smell right.

Why didn’t he go to Solomon himself?

Because his request didn’t stand on its own merit.

He was hoping Solomon’s love for his mother
would blind him to its hidden agenda.

Help me take a lesson, Holy Spirit…

next time somebody asks me to do their dirty work.
