Check the mirror, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. He prayed to the Lord, ‘Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home?’”
(Jonah 4:1-2)

First, Jonah runs from You, Jesus.

After he spends three days in the belly of a fish

he repents.

But when his obedience doesn’t go the way he likes

he justifies why he ran from You to begin with.

It’s a good thing I don’t ever do anything like that, Father.

Right…?

Right…?

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry.”
(Jonah 4:1)

There are a lot of things going on right now, Jesus

that seem very wrong to me.

Am I going to be like Jonah?

Am I going to be angry about it
shake my fist in Your face

and charge You with wrongdoing?

Even worse

am I going to lose faith
conclude You no longer intervene
in the affairs of earth?

NO!

I put all my trust in You!

Pray this Lazaroo in open-eyed awareness:

“Then the Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.’”
(Genesis 4:6-7)

Sin is crouching at my door, too, Jesus.

May I never forget how passionately and persistently
sin desires to have me!

But may I always remember:

Greater are You in me
than the one who is in the world!

Pray this Lazaroo with utter humility:

“‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am faithful,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt—you have rebelled against the Lord your God, you have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every spreading tree, and have not obeyed me,’ declares the Lord.”
(Jeremiah 3:12-13)

It’s when I refuse to acknowledge my guilt

that You continue to frown on me, isn’t it, Jesus?

Well, let me take care of that right now:

I’m guilty!
My sins are horrific!

I have no excuse.
None.

Please be merciful to me, a sinner.

Pray this Lazaroo in deeper understanding:

“Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry…”
(Genesis 4:3-5)

When You correct me, Jesus

may I never react defensively.

Help me respond with a humble, passionate desire

to please You in everything I think, say and do.

Pray this Lazaroo with white-hot fervor:

“But when [they] heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead…they were very angry. They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it. But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.”
(Nehemiah 4:7-9)

This is what I need to do, when the forces of evil come against me, Jesus:

Pray my head off.
Take every action You show me to take.
Trust You for the outcome.

Pray this Lazaroo in passionate dedication:

“…you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame. Have you not just called to me: ‘‘My Father, my friend from my youth, will you always be angry? Will your wrath continue forever?’ This is how you talk, but you do all the evil you can.”
(Jeremiah 3:3-5)

You never were much for empty words, were You, Jesus?

Weren’t then
aren’t now.

Nor am I.

I’ve heard too many broken promises
to make any to You.

Pray this Lazaroo bursting with confidence:

“When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, ‘What are those feeble Jews doing’”
(Nehemiah 4:1-2)

To my enemies, Jesus

I may look feeble.

But if my enemies are Your enemies

my enemies are underestimating what You’re able to do

through one of Your feeble followers
who puts all my trust in You.

Pray this Lazaroo in solemn recognition:

“Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?”
(Hebrews 3:16-17)

It’s bad enough to miss Your will when I haven’t heard from You, Jesus

but it’s inexcusable when I have.
No wonder You were so angry with Your people!

The thing is…

I’ve read the Bible.
I’ve heard.

Take the words of this Lazaroo as a personal warning:

“On the day I punish Israel for her sins, I will destroy the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.”
(Amos 3:14)

You have to be pretty angry to destroy your own altar, Jesus!

But it was because Your people had made a mockery of it.

They kept going through the motions of worshiping You

but their sinful lives made it clear:

Their devoted words
were nothing but lies.
