Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“Joab…sent messengers after Abner…But David did not know it. Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.”
(2 Samuel 3:26-27)

Joab was a mighty warrior and general, Jesus

but he had an ugly, murderous streak.

Rid me of everything You find in me

that would bring dishonor to Your Name!

Rejoice! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men were found missing. But David’s men had killed three hundred and sixty Benjamites who were with Abner. They took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron by daybreak.”
(2 Samuel 2:30-32)

The battle aftermath, Jesus.

Losses on both sides.
Pain. Deep mourning.

Still, one the clear victor.

As always, the one You chose.

Because of You
that’s me.

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“…every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.”
(2 Samuel 2:23)

There’s death everywhere on the battlefield, Jesus.

Why stop over Asahel’s body?
Because he was General Joab’s brother.

Not only the prominent – but everyone’s death matters to You!

It should to me

especially because it raises the most important question of all:

“Did they go to heaven or hell?”

The answer? Heaven –

but only if they had put their trust in You.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot.”
(2 Samuel 2:23)

Abner warned Asahel again and again, Jesus

to no avail.

Asahel had made up his mind that he was going to kill Abner –

ignoring the reality that Abner was the superior fighter.

Absent a direct command from you

may I never do likewise.

Plead for understanding, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”
(2 Samuel 2:22)

Abner had every reason to believe that even if it was self-defense

to kill Joab’s little brother would sign his own death warrant, Jesus!

But he was trying to reason with a kid who didn’t care.

All Asahel wanted to do was kill the great Abner.

What should I do when I’m caught between two really bad choices?

O Holy Spirit!

Please open my eyes!
Show me!

Pray this Lazaroo in growing wisdom:

“Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down?”
(2 Samuel 2:22)

Abner had the ability to kill Asahel, Jesus

but he didn’t want to.

He knew if Asahel continued to press his attack, he’d have to defend himself

and it would end badly.

But of course, Asahel thought he could kill Abner, so he refused to listen

and it cost him his life.

O God!

Eradicate from my life every shred of empty bravado
and every foolish pursuit!

Pray this Lazaroo with Spirit-led caution:

“Again Abner warned Asahel…”
(2 Samuel 2:22)

The basic problem with warnings, Jesus…

is I never know when it’s my last.

Nothing happened to Asahel after Abner’s first warning

so Asahel kept right on chasing him.

Little did he know this warning was it.

When he ignored it, Abner killed him.
Boom. Right then. Right there.

Am I on my last warning in any area, Father?

There’s no way for me to know, is there?

I’d better stop now.

Take warning, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“But Asahel would not stop…”
(2 Samuel 2:21)

Asahel was racing toward certain death, Jesus.

Abner warned him again and again.

Asahel wouldn’t listen
wouldn’t stop.

So he died.
Totally, his own fault.

You will only warn me so many times, Holy Spirit.

If I don’t stop, the consequences are on me.

Maybe it’s to make better choices.
Maybe it’s to end destructive friendships.
Maybe it’s to stop saying something.
Maybe it’s to change my behavior.

Help me listen!

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“…take on one of the young men…”
(2 Samuel 2:21)

Asahel wanted to take down the enemy leader, Jesus –

a noble goal, to be sure –

but one he wasn’t equipped to accomplish.

Abner was older and slower…but more experienced.

Sadly, when Asahel refused to pick on someone his own age

it cost him his life.

Am I chasing anything I shouldn’t be, Father?

If so, show me!

I don’t want to waste Your precious gift of time

nor lose my life.

Follow the inner prompting of the Holy Spirit as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Turn aside to the right or to the left…”
(2 Samuel 2:21)

You’ve clearly commanded me Jesus:

Don’t turn aside to the right or the left
when it comes to obeying Your Word.

But Abner was warning Asahel.

When Asahel refused to turn aside
it cost him his life.

So sometimes I should refuse to change course

and at other times I’d better!

How can I recognize the difference?

Only as I follow You
every step of the way.
