I’m ashamed to admit that It’s only when I look back

that I can feel the love.

You could have abandoned me in my sin

“…pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people…”
(2 Thessalonians 3:2)

Sometimes these people seemingly pop up out of nowhere, Jesus.

But more times than not
I had a hand in bringing them into my life.

Of course, I didn’t know at the time
how much trouble they’d be.

But You did.

You’ve warned me repeatedly
about what happens
when I consort with the wrong people.

I don’t deserve deliverance from their clutches.

But in Your loving mercy
I’m begging You to do exactly that.

These were the people no one thought would make it, Jesus!

But You were promising it would happen.

At the time, it looked impossible.

It was!

…for everybody but You.

You’re the God who makes the impossible possible.

You turn faded, black and white dreams
into Technicolor reality.

What impossible eventualities am I dreaming of, Father?

Which of these things nobody thinks can happen

are You about to bring to pass?

I’ve been on a few of those roundabout journeys, Jesus!

At least, that’s what they felt like at the time:

a total waste.

But is that what they were?

No. Even when I didn’t know what I was doing

You did.

You’ve made me a promise:

That if I will seek You with my whole heart
and faithfully follow You all the way

You will guide my steps.

There came a day in the history of these United States
when we could no longer endure England’s rule.

But Job was referring to death –

which, because of his pain
looked mighty good to him at that time.

O God!

Help me truly, utterly, completely, irrevocably die
to my old sin master Satan

and walk in the freedom

of obedience to You.

I know.

That includes some things I won’t like.

But I trust You!

I know that anything You do to me or require of me that is hard, distasteful or even heartbreaking

is not only for Your good
but for mine.
