Pray this Lazaroo with inexpressible gratitude:

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.”
(Hebrews 4:9-11)

I rest, Jesus –

from my futile work of attempting to earn my salvation.

I can’t – no matter how hard I try.

I confess that my faith in You –

Your death, burial and resurrection –

is my only hope for eternal life!

Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Though you, Israel, commit adultery, do not let Judah become guilty.”
(Hosea 4:15)

A command like that is hard to obey, Jesus.

Certainly, a person caught in sin might wish for better
for someone they truly love.

But it’s incredibly hard to tell someone:

“Don’t do as I’ve done.
Do as I say.”

A bad example is a tall, tall mountain to climb.

From this moment forward, help me set a good example

for everyone I want to see live for You!

Learn from this bad example, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?”
(Job 4:2)

And so it begins to unravel, Jesus.

Job’s three friends were awesome
as long as they kept silent.

But now, Job’s friend Eliphaz can’t endure Job’s complaints without rebuking him.

Like Job, Eliphaz totally misreads what’s going on.
But that doesn’t stop him from giving his judgmental opinion.

How often have I done that, Father –

made a suffering person’s load heavier?

Pray this Lazaroo in heartbroken concern:

“Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”
(Romans 1:32)

It’s a scary thing to know what’s right, Jesus

and then not  do it…

to know what I shouldn’t do

and keep right on doing it.

It’s an even scarier thing to encourage others to follow my bad example.

O God! Don’t let me fall into that trap!

Pray this Lazaroo with determined desire:

“Yet the people still came…”
(Mark 1:45)

So many reject Your words, Jesus

yet the people still come.

So many of Your followers set bad examples

yet the people still come.

You command us to give up our favorite sins

yet the people still come.

You warn us that there’s a cross for us to bear

yet the people still come.

Satan is doing his best to turn me away

yet I still come to You – my only Hope.

Beg God to help you walk your talk as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken…”
(Jude 1:15)

Ungodly sinners are known for harsh words, Jesus.

But how much worse are harsh words
spoken by me?

I’m supposed to be Your child –

redeemed by Your blood on the cross –
chosen, changed, sanctified.

I’m supposed to set a holy example

safe for everyone to follow.

How is the person I’ve spoken harshly against

supposed to be able to tell the difference
between me and an ungodly sinner?

They can’t.

Pray this Lazaroo in trembling fear:

“When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden…”
(Leviticus 4:22)

Let me reword the rest of that sentence, Jesus:

“…it’s bad news.”

Good that the leader didn’t mean to do it

bad that the leader didn’t know enough not to.

Being one of Your leaders is such an awesome privilege

and an incredibly fearful responsibility

because so much is at stake.

The only hope that leader has

is to stay deep, daily, moment-by-moment
1on1 with You.

Go to school, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The fate of the fool will overtake me also…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

Solomon’s right, Jesus:

Just as the person who foolishly disbelieves in you
will one day breathe their last on this earth

so will those who believe in You with all their hearts.

But Solomon was also wrong:

Unlike the unbelieving fool
every believer who closes their eyes here

will open them in heaven.

Sadly, as he grew older, Solomon disobeyed You.

May I not follow his foolish example.

Pray this Lazaroo with caution:

“…he clung to the sins of Jeroboam…he did not turn away from them.”
(2 Kings 3:3)

There are a lot of bad examples out there, Jesus

some of which appear to work.

From a distance.
Short term.

However, I have Your word on it:

Sooner or later they will fail.
Every last one of them.

So why would I want to follow anyone’s bad example over the cliff?

Might be a good idea to turn away.
While I can.
