Pray this Lazaroo in stunned gratitude:

“In every province to which the edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping and wailing. Many lay in sackcloth and ashes.”
(Esther 4:3)

Horrible news does that to us, Jesus!

For the Jews, this news was about as bad as it gets.

The king had issued a decree
that made it legal to destroy their entire nation.

But as You do again and again for Your hurting people

You were about to turn that bad news upside down!

Pray this Lazaroo with white-hot fervor:

“When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly.”
(Esther 4:1)

Mordecai felt exactly the way most of us would feel, Jesus

when confronted with horrific, disastrously unacceptable news.

He was right.

The threatened annihilation of all the Jews was catastrophic.

But He was also wrong.

Because You were about to turn this unthinkable situation
into stunning victory.

Help me remember that

next time I’m tempted to lose it over bad news.

Pray this Lazaroo in holy fear:

“Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.”
(Haggai 2:21)

Getting an assignment like this from You would be a challenge, Jesus.

First of all, it’s hard to deliver bad news.

Secondly, news this huge and terrifying
would almost certainly directly impact me.

Finally, what if You didn’t do it in the governor’s lifetime?
I’d look like a false prophet.

But ultimately, none of that matters, does it?

My job is very simple:

Obey.

Pray this Lazaroo with absolute sincerity:

“Rend your heart and not your garments.”
(Joel 2:13)

That had become the custom, hadn’t it, Jesus –

tearing their clothes upon hearing of something disastrous.

When that custom first began, it was no doubt powerful

because it came straight from the heart.

But over the years, people began doing it because it was expected

even when it didn’t truly touch their hearts.

O God! I know what You want!

Not merely my outward behavior.

In repentance…

You want my heart.

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“The LORD has spoken.”
(Obadiah 1:18)

That’s what’s said when You’ve handed down Your verdict, Jesus.

There’s a finality to it

as though The Judge’s gavel has fallen

reverberating throughout eternity.

When it’s worded like that

it’s usually bad news.

But You also speak amazing promises, LORD!

These, too, are good for all time.

Your promises to Your loving, obedient people

can never, ever be broken.

May every happy, faithful promise in Your book

be forever  mine.

Pray this Lazaroo in trembling fear:

“When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden…”
(Leviticus 4:22)

Let me reword the rest of that sentence, Jesus:

“…it’s bad news.”

Good that the leader didn’t mean to do it

bad that the leader didn’t know enough not to.

Being one of Your leaders is such an awesome privilege

and an incredibly fearful responsibility

because so much is at stake.

The only hope that leader has

is to stay deep, daily, moment-by-moment
1on1 with You.

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“…through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow…”
(Philippians 1:26)

I long to have that effect on others, Jesus!

to be the bearer of good news
to be used by You to draw others close to You.

Ironically, that sometimes requires me to start with the bad news

that they – like I – are sinners who need to repent
that refusal to repent and believe in Your

death
burial
resurrection

will land them eternally in hell.
