Pray this Lazaroo in grateful perspective:

“So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.”
(1 Corinthians 3:21-23)

It’s okay for us to be grateful for the leaders You’ve so gifted, Jesus

but not to put them on a pedestal of worship.

You’ve gifted us all…even me!

May I never forget that.

Pray this Lazaroo with new direction:

“…they boast about themselves…”
(Jude 1:16)

I need to become a better boaster, Jesus!

Not about myself.
About You.

Oh, sure, I routinely say nice things about You

but I want to break out of my routine!

Show me how to take my boasting about You up a notch.

Make that many notches!

It starts with becoming more aware of the countless things You’re doing for me and others, doesn’t it?

Help me see it –

so I can proclaim it!

Rejoice! as you pray your Lazaroo on this glorious Christmas day:

“…boasting of what we have and do…”
(1 John 2:16)

Why do we do that, Jesus?

Everything we have or do comes from You!

Better question:

Why do I do that?

Because – God help me! – I do.

I guess it’s because I want people to think well of me.

But why? I’m nothing but a dirty, rotten sinner saved by grace.

Your outrageous, inconceivable love

is the only reason my punishment in hell
has been switched to eternal joy in heaven.

Pray this Lazaroo in growing wisdom:

“…human pride brought low…”
(Isaiah 2:11)

There’s a kind of pride that is good, wholesome, healthy, Jesus.

It’s being proud of You.
It’s being proud of what You do.
It’s being proud of what You enable others to do.

But human pride takes no notice of You.

Human pride puffs itself up
boasting that all its achievements come from itself.

Godly pride points to the heavens to acknowledge You.

Human pride pounds on its own chest

until it collapses.

Pray this Lazaroo in humbled dedication:

“They are…boastful…”
(Romans 1:29-30)

Boasting is hard to take, Jesus.

When somebody starts telling me how good they are
or goes on and on about what they’ve accomplished
or attempts to impress me with their important friends

I can hardly bear it.
I can’t wait for them to stop.

So why do I do it?

What makes me think others want to hear what I don’t?

Please forgive me!

I have no reason to boast about anything

but You.

Consider a course correction, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…so that no one can boast.”
(Ephesians 2:9)

What makes me want to boast, Jesus?

Is it because I worry that people don’t think highly enough of me

so I attempt to give them proof of my worth?

Or is it because I struggle so mightily with my own self-worth

that I boast in a futile attempt to convince myself?

Either way, people don’t like it.

Far more importantly, You don’t like it!

I’ve got to stop it.
