Pray this Lazaroo in wholehearted dedication:

“All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. We completely destroyed them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying every city—men, women and children. But all the livestock and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.”
(Deuteronomy 3:5-7)

Brutal, Jesus. Brutal.

But when You ordered it
You had a reason.

I will never stop trying to understand Your Ways…

but may I never second-guess You!

Pray this Lazaroo in tearful trust:

“So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down, leaving no survivors. At that time we took all his cities. There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom in Bashan.”
(Deuteronomy 3:3-4)

The Promised Land wasn’t empty, Jesus.

Multiplied thousands of wicked people lived there

and had to be eliminated.

Not our decision.

Yours.

Pray this Lazaroo in peaceful trust:

“In the evening they will lie down in the houses of Ashkelon. The Lord their God will care for them…”
(Zephaniah 2:7)

Ashkelon was one of the most secure, well-defended cities of its day, Jesus.

Those who lived there could sleep soundly

knowing they were protected by a huge wall on the land side
and by a high natural bluff on the side facing the sea.

But may I always remember:

Without Your protection, nobody is safe.

Pray this Lazaroo with renewed ambition:

“My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love…”
(Colossians 2:2)

That’s not only what Paul wanted, Jesus

that’s what every mother and father wants for their children
what every pastor wants for Your Church.

How wonderful it would be if cities and nations could be united in love!

But to do that
they’d have to be united in You

which is no doubt why You’ve sent us out
to preach the gospel!

Take it to heart! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Gaza will be abandoned and Ashkelon left in ruins. At midday Ashdod will be emptied and Ekron uprooted.”
(Zephaniah 2:4)

Wow, Jesus:

“Abandoned. Left in ruins.
Emptied. Uprooted.”

I wouldn’t want any of those to happen to me

let alone all of them!

But this is exactly what will happen on the day of Your wrath

to the cities of this –

or any country –

that repeatedly defies You.

O God!

Send a revival to my nation!

To the world!

Learn a hard lesson, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“It is decreed that the city be exiled…”
(Nahum 2:7)

I’ve heard of people being exiled, Jesus –

kicked out of their own country.

But I’ve never heard of an entire city

being removed from its national identity.

If that were to happen to a city in my country

which one would it be?

Or perhaps I should ask, “Which ones?”

You’re not messing around, are You?

When an entire city full of people ignore Your repeated warnings

You act.

Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…a visit required three days.”
(Jonah 3:3)

That’s how long it took Jonah to go through the ancient city of Ninevah, Jesus.

Back then, that was a lot.
Today, not so much.

How long would it take one of Your prophets

to go through Tokyo, Shanghai, Jakarta, Manila, Seoul, Beijing, New York –

for every person to hear they needed to repent?

Today’s technology would help!

But You care about smaller cities, towns, villages, hamlets – neighborhoods, too…

and even me.

Pray this Lazaroo in soul-deep gratitude:

“…the descendants of Aaron were given…their pasturelands.”
(1 Chronicles 6:57)

It’s great to have houses in cities, Jesus

…but oh, those pasturelands!

wide-open expanses of grass and wildflowers

where a breath of sweet fresh air can be deeply inhaled
where livestock can graze on Your bounty.

I don’t have to own pasturelands to thoroughly enjoy them.

Their beauty is available to all who pass by
reminding us that whether we worked to acquire them or not

they’re still a gift.

Pray this Lazaroo in steadfast faith:

“When they left…”
(Joshua 2:22)

Joshua’s spies left when they had to, Jesus.

Otherwise, they would have failed in Your purpose.

There’s a time for me to leave, too.

Jobs…relationships…homes…churches…cities…countries –

any of those and plenty else –

are up for grabs.

But sometimes You call me to stay in them for now…

or for the duration.

So the reason for me to leave anything, anyone, anywhere

is not because it’s hard, boring, dangerous, painful

but only because You say so.
