Pray this Lazaroo with eyes riveted on Jesus:

“In the middle of the night something startled the man; he turned—and there was a woman lying at his feet!”
(Ruth 3:8)

Ruth had broken protocol, Jesus.

It was not their custom to allow women in the threshing floor.

But Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi told her to do it

and as far as Ruth was concerned, that trumped their customs.

You honored it!
Naomi was right.

Give me the wisdom to know when to do what’s expected

and when You’ve called me
to take the road less traveled.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“There is a certain people dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom who keep themselves separate. Their customs are different from those of all other people…If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them…”
(Esther 3:8-9)

Just like those Jews Haman wanted to destroy, Jesus

You’ve commanded me to keep myself separate
from everything that contaminates body and spirit

holy unto You.

Satan desires to destroy me!

but You’re not going to let him.

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply. Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.”
(Esther 3:4)

When the laws of the land conflict with Your Word, Jesus

it’s no contest.

Traditions, customs, police, judges, mayors, governors presidents all lose.

You win.

The only reason I have to pray about it

is to learn from You the wisest way to proceed.

Pray this Lazaroo with sobered clarity:

“…his religion is worthless.”
(James 1:26)

What a blow that would be, Jesus!

To spend a lifetime thinking my religion is doing me good
that You’re pleased enough with me to take me to heaven

then find out that I’ve wasted my time and energy
that all my religious behavior and cherished beliefs

were dead wrong.

Which is why I’m not depending on my ideas, traditions and customs.

My only hope – and I know it to the bone –

is You.
