Pray this Lazaroo with a heart full of love:

“Be merciful…”
(Jude 1:22)

I’ve got a question, Jesus:

Why is it so hard for me to be merciful to others

while being the grateful recipient
of all this mercy I’m receiving from You?

I know what I deserve –

and it ain’t peaches and cream.

I deserve dismemberment, humiliation and hell.
Instead, You’ve given me life, golden opportunities and heaven.

Surely, I can muster up a little of Your mercy toward others!

You’ve made it pretty clear:

If I don’t

my own mercy could come to a halt.

Pray this Lazaroo with growing understanding:

“In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel…”
(Haggai 1:1)

I would love to experience that kind of specificity, Jesus

when You give a message to me.

Not that I deserve it.
I don’t.

But oh, would it be nice!

I spend a lot of time trying to figure out
exactly how to apply Your Word

which…come to think of it…
is exactly what You intend.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai…”
(Haggai 1:1)

It’s not every day that You speak out loud to someone on earth, Jesus.

If You spoke like that to me
I’d mark the date too.

I’d probably make a note of the time, as well.

How often I’ve wished You would tell me exactly what You want me to do!

Though I don’t in any way, shape or form deserve it,
I know You can.

But there’s a reason You don’t.

Probably many reasons.

One of which is You’re waiting on me

to pay attention to what You’ve already spoken to me

through Your Word.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“Aaron and his sons are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry. But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die.”
(Numbers 4:19-20)

There are some things that are off-limits for me, too, Jesus.

Please.
Show me what they are.

May I never desire

what You haven’t given me.

You’ve already given me

far more than I deserve!

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit:

“This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:”
(Jonah 3:7)

Unbelievably powerful, Jesus.

An unrighteous king hears a message from You
recognizes the error of his ways
repents of his sin

and here’s the part that nails it:

he makes it public!

As a result, the whole nation repents!

Great God!
Give us leaders of such great courage today.
I beg You!

because that just may be what it takes

to rescue my country and all the nations
from the coming disaster we deserve.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate…Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing—”
(Joel 2:13-14)

Why do You treat us so much better than we deserve, Jesus?

It’s Your deep, abiding love, isn’t it?

Hallelujah!
Thank You!

But I can’t let it stop here, can I?

There are those who’ve wronged me
even as I have wronged You.

May I extend to them
Your deep, abiding love!

Pray this Lazaroo in warm-hearted gratitude:

“…all their glory is like the flowers of the field…”
(1 Peter 1:24)

I know field flowers don’t last long, Jesus

but as they raise their heads under Your bright sun
gently nodding under a passing breeze

they sure are beautiful.

So I’m grateful.

Whatever glory I gain on this earth –

though transitory –

is nevertheless a gift from You.

I don’t deserve it
but I appreciate it.

It’s a sweetener in the sometimes bitter tea of life

on this sin-cursed earth.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“May God deal with me, be it ever so severely…”
(1 Kings 2:23)

Until You, Jesus

Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived.

But that was one of the most foolish things he ever uttered.

I would never ask You to deal with me severely
if I didn’t follow through on something –
no matter how important.

I beg You to be far gentler with me than I deserve!

so I can keep trying

until I get it right.
