Pray this Lazaroo with single minded intent:

“…rid yourselves of all malice…”
(1 Peter 2:1)

Is there any malice in me, Jesus? Even a tiny shred of it?

If so, expunge every hint of it from every shadow and molecule
of my heart, mind, soul, emotions, body and being!

I know what it is to be the victim of malice.

It’s hell on earth.

No matter what anyone has said or done to me

I absolutely refuse to be guilty of a single
malicious thought, word or deed.

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“They dash to the city wall…”
(Nahum 2:5)

That’s what enemy soldiers did, Jesus…

when attacking a city they felt confident they could destroy.

They didn’t crawl or walk.

They ran to the wall –
eager to destroy those cowering within.

Perhaps that’s what the enemies of my soul do, Father.

They’ve seen the sins and blunders of my past.
They assume I’ll keep right on sinning and blundering.

But by Your grace and in Your strength:

Not this time.

Pray this Lazaroo in trembling expectation:

“…you have destroyed lands…”
(Habakkuk 2:8)

The more successful and prosperous we become, Jesus

the more of Your lands we destroy.

We pile our refuse in great, ugly heaps to rot in the sun

sending their stench into Your heavens.

We pipe our poisons into Your lakes, rivers and oceans

thereby polluting Your earth when we water our fields

and drink.

We call this progress.

But there is coming a day when You will arise and declare:

“Enough!”

Pray this Lazaroo in humbled zeal:

“I have been most rebellious.”
(Lamentations 1:20)

That’s quite a confession, Jesus…

especially because of who’s making it.

This is no rapist, murderer, pillager, criminal.

The great prophet Jeremiah is speaking!

He’s the one who faithfully obeyed You throughout his life –

and suffered greatly for it.

He’s the one You appointed over nations and kingdoms –

to tear down, destroy, build and plant.

If he could be this humble and self-aware of his sins

who am I to be less?

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“I struck all the work of your hands…”
(Haggai 2:17)

How could You, Jesus?

All that work done by Your people
ruined not by their enemies

but by their God.

Why?

Out of love.

You’ll do whatever’s necessary to get my attention and turn me around

before it’s too late.

The destruction of all my work is a small price to pay

for the salvation of my life.

It’s tough love, LORD!

But sometimes…
it’s the love I need.

Cling to the promise of God, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob…though destroyers…have ruined their vines.”
(Nahum 2:3)

It takes years for a grapevine to mature to the point where it produces truly great grapes, Jesus.

The grape grower invests hours in pruning and training the vine
so it pours all its lifeforce into creating great-tasting grapes
rather than growing big and bushy with stems and leaves.

O God!

Is that what You’re doing with me?

Please.
Whatever it takes.
Restore my splendor.

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“…their heart is filled with destruction.”
(Psalms 5:9)

The idea of having someone like this for an enemy is terrifying, Jesus!

They’re not content with doing wrong.
Not willing to stop at trying to entice me to sin.

It’s not enough for them to hurt me.
They won’t be happy until they’ve destroyed me.

But the idea of ever allowing a person like this to be my friend?
Thinking I can handle it?

Deliver me, my God!
Deliver me.

Pray this Lazaroo with sobriety:

“…those who oppose you…will be destroyed…”
(Philippians 1:28)

This might seem like heady stuff to some people, Jesus…

but that’s not how it’s supposed to strike me, is it?

Is it encouraging to know that one day I will get relief from my enemies?

Sure.

But it’s also enormously sobering.

I don’t deserve for anybody to be destroyed for opposing me!

But it’s not really about me, is it?

It’s about those who oppose me
because they oppose You.

Pray this Lazaroo in lesson-learning horror:

“Why then has he become plunder?”
(Jeremiah 2:14)

Before I try to answer that question, Jesus

I need to ponder what it is to be plunder.

It’s what raiders get when they destroy a city

looting whatever’s left after killing all its inhabitants
having burned it to the ground.

I don’t want to be my enemies’ stolen goods, Father!

To avoid that, it’s essential that I obey You.

I long to remain Your child, Your treasured possession

now…and forever.
