Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by David’s men.”
(2 Samuel 2:17)

You determine the outcome of every battle, Jesus!

The size of each army doesn’t matter.

The one You declare the victor

is the one who will win.

Not some of the time.
Not most of the time.
Every time.

How many more battles will I face, Father?

It doesn’t matter, does it?

So long as I faithfully, passionately follow You

I’ll prevail in every one.

Pray this Lazaroo with determination:

“Malkijah…and Hasshub…repaired another section…”
(Nehemiah 3:11)

Some days that’s how it goes, Jesus.

In fact, most days that’s how it goes.

Another section, another task like yesterday’s, another day like the one before.

Not starting anything, not completing anything
slogging through the interminable middle.

At such times it’s hard to grab perspective.

It’s easy to lose the whole point

until I remember that this is what You call, “faithfulness”

and that You richly, lavishly, with absolute certainty

reward it.

Pray this Lazaroo with passion:

“…you must not…be intimate with any man…”
(Hosea 3:3)

Why would Hosea say such a thing to his wife, Jesus?

Actually, he had a pretty good reason:

She had cheated on him.

So why would he take her back?

Which raises another question:

Why have You taken me back?

I’ve sinned.
That’s cheating on You.

Hosea took back Gomer because You told him to

which is the same reason I’ve got to forgive those

who’ve sinned against me.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“…you are faithful…”
(3 John 1:5)

If only You could say that about me, Jesus!

Well…at least in some areas…You can.

But not in all.

There are seasons, days, moments
when I drop the ball.

That’s a euphemism I prefer

to confessing that I’ve inexcusably sinned.

I know no one is perfect.

I’m aware we all stumble in many ways.

But that doesn’t change the fact that in Your strength

I’ve got to give my all

because You deserve better.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“…not by works…”
(Ephesians 2:9)

The lazy person is thrilled to hear this, Jesus!

You save us because we believe in You
not because of anything we do to earn heaven.

(Of course, lazy people need to remember

that faith without works is dead.)

Ironically, though, it’s the faithful, dependable, diligent person

who struggles most when they hear
that even their greatest achievements
aren’t even close to enough.

What can wash away my sin?

Nothing but Your blood, my Jesus.

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“The LORD has spoken.”
(Obadiah 1:18)

That’s what’s said when You’ve handed down Your verdict, Jesus.

There’s a finality to it

as though The Judge’s gavel has fallen

reverberating throughout eternity.

When it’s worded like that

it’s usually bad news.

But You also speak amazing promises, LORD!

These, too, are good for all time.

Your promises to Your loving, obedient people

can never, ever be broken.

May every happy, faithful promise in Your book

be forever  mine.

Pray this Lazaroo in heartfelt gratitude:

“…he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a…faithful high priest…”
(Hebrews 2:17)

It’s a high honor to be high priest, Jesus.

Only a handful have served in that holy office.

Not all high priests have served well.

Some of them were swayed by jealousy, politics, pride.

Thank You for those who served conscientiously!

But there’s only One perfectly faithful High Priest –
the One who serves this day and forever:

You.

Pray this Lazaroo in zealous love:

Doing a lot of work for a short while…stopping…doing some more later when I feel like it…

that sticking with it day in/day out creates.

Steady work isn’t always flashy

but it gets the job done.

May I be a steady worker in Your fields
