Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism.”
(Romans 2:9-11)

Not much of a debate about which way I should turn, Jesus!

Straight to You.

You don’t play favorites.

But if I obey You
I’ll be one of Your favorites.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“…if you show favoritism, you sin…”
(James 2:9)

We all have favorites, don’t we, Jesus?

a parent, child, grandchild
friend, coworker, church member.

Maybe we like the way they look or act

enjoy the gifts You’ve given them
connect with their more attractive personalities.

But when it comes to how I treat them

You demand that I be absolutely fair
treating them in accordance with what is right

or I will cease to be one of Your favorites!

Pray this Lazaroo with every fiber of your being:

“…you have…shown partiality in matters of the law.”
(Malachi 2:9)

Not something that pleases You, Jesus.

You gave Your law to be applied equally, fairly, to all.
Instead, they used it inconsistently

holding some to its righteous standards
excusing others.

I can’t begin to imagine how displeased You are

with my inconsistency, LORD.

Please forgive me!
I am utterly without excuse.

All I can do is give it everything I’ve got

and beg You to be Yourself in me.

Pray this Lazaroo, counting on God to make it right:

“…you have…shown partiality…”
(Malachi 2:9)

You hate that, don’t You, Jesus?

So do I.

When the playing field isn’t level

when referees favor one team over the other
when the in-crowd accepts a few and shuns the rest
when a parent loves one child more than another

when one person is given more than the other
though both deserve it equally.

when the outcome is decided in advance

behind closed doors
before the public vote
which takes place only for show.

Pray this Lazaroo with sober assessment:

“…say to the poor man, ‘You stand there…’”
(James 2:3)

Nothing wrong with telling a poor man where to stand, Jesus.
Nothing wrong with telling a rich man where to sit.

But when I tell a man he can have seat because he’s rich
and tell a man he has to stand because he’s poor

I’m in trouble.
With You.

Of course, I don’t believe in disrespect.
I don’t believe in showing favoritism.

Except…am I guilty of doing it?

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“Here’s a good seat for you…”
(James 2:3)

There’s nothing wrong with offering somebody a good seat, Jesus

unless I’m doing so to favor the rich over the poor.

What is there in my makeup that causes me to automatically respect someone wearing fine clothes

and look down on someone dressed shabbily?

If I knew them as only You do

it’s possible that the poor person is the one who deserves my respect
and the rich one my contempt.

Pray this Lazaroo with lavish love:

“If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes…”
(James 2:3)

It’s hard not to, Jesus!

People who dress well catch the eye.
Often they’re educated, hardworking, interesting.

But You despise favoritism!

You made everyone I see.

When I fawn on one and ignore the other

I insult You.

Fact is, some of those able to dress to the nines

are shallow, self-centered, boorish.

I’d do well to treat everyone the same:

with love, consideration and respect.

Pray this Lazaroo in the love of God:

“Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes…”
(James 2:2)

So how do I treat him, Jesus?

Do I rush over and fawn all over him?

I hope not.
So do You.

If he’s worth as much as the ring on his finger

he hopes not, too.

But You do want me to go over and show him Your love

not because of his appearance
but because that’s what he so desperately needs.

Get to the heart of the matter, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…don’t show favoritism.”
(James 2:1)

It’s interesting, Jesus…

You tell me not to show favoritism.
You don’t tell me not to feel it.

Of course, I imagine You’d like me to conquer that, too.

But first things first.

Not showing it is easier than not feeling it

though it’s hard enough!

Or do I have that backwards?

Might it be that my only hope at not showing favoritism

is not to harbor it in my heart to begin with?
