Fully open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Then the LORD raised up judges…”
(Judges 2:16)

When we need judges…

that’s who You raise up, Jesus.

You always provide everyone and everything we need.

Of course, I don’t always know what that is.
Maybe I should say I seldom know what it is.

So when You provide it

I may not recognize it.

I may mope, rage, or fear, wondering why You don’t answer

when in fact Your answer has already arrived
sitting on my front porch.

Pray this Lazaroo with Holy Spirit-engendered courage:

“Do not be afraid of them…”
(Ezekiel 3:9)

You don’t want me to be afraid, do You, Jesus?

In part, I know that’s because You love me.
When I suffer, You suffer.

But it’s more than that.

You don’t want me to be afraid
because I have You!

With You on my side –

or rather, with me on yours –

there is absolutely no reason on Your green earth

for me to be caught trembling in my boots.

Not ever.

Pray this Lazaroo in awareness of your deepest need:

“…in the hiding places on the mountainside…”
(Song of Songs 2:14)

With such language Solomon wooed his bride, Jesus…

even as You call to me.

It is true that I encounter You when I’m with Your children

so often surprised at how sweet their fellowship can be
especially when they lay aside fear and pretense
daring to be their true Christian selves.

But it is in my times alone with You

1on1

that I experience the deepest, sweetest joy.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“…Jesus Christ…will be with us in…love.”
(2 John 1:3)

That’s how I want You to be with me, Jesus!

That’s how I want to be with You.

You…Are Pure Love.

Of course, there’s a fierce side of You, too.

Because pure love isn’t weak.

It’s strong, robust, powerful, formidable.

When called for – which isn’t all that rare –

it has the capacity to be ferocious –

in defense of those You love

and to arouse in them fear, wonder, awe

worship.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“…they scale walls like soldiers.”
(Joel 2:7)

There are a lot of ways to scale a wall, Jesus.

Some do it clumsily.
Many can’t do it at all.

But if I looked down from the top of the wall

and saw a battle-hardened warrior climbing toward me
fear would grip my heart.

That’s what Your people experienced when that army of locusts attacked –

the army You sent to punish them.

May You never!

have to do that to me.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“Lions have roared…”
(Jeremiah 2:15)

That’s a terrifying thing, Jesus.

I can imagine how an innocent gazelle
quenching her thirst from a peaceful brook must feel
when that sound comes from the brush behind.

The reason I can imagine it

is that I’ve been stalked by lions of a different sort –
people intent on bringing me down.

But just when fear is about to immobilize me

I remember You, the Lion of Judah

whose ultimate roar
drowns theirs out.

Pray this Lazaroo with opened eyes:

“I came to you…with much trembling.”
(1 Corinthians 2:3)

This is the Apostle Paul talking, Jesus!

The man through whom You’ve given us
much of the New Testament.

The man through whom You healed sick people
and raised the dead.

The man who was stoned and left for dead
but got up.

The man who was bitten by a poisonous snake
and shook it off with no ill effects.

If there were times when he trembled

so can I.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“I came to you in…fear…”
(1 Corinthians 2:3)

What, Jesus?

The great Apostle Paul approached one of his assignments

in fear?

Why?

You had worked miracle after miracle through him

like raising the dead.

I would have thought he’d be fearless!

Besides, there’s a Biblical command:
You tell us not to fear.

But obedience is one thing

emotion is another.

Like Paul, please help me obey You to the end

to the letter

no matter how much I fear.

Pray this Lazaroo…with transparency:

“I wrote you out of great distress…”
(2 Corinthians 2:4)

So much for the “super Christians” who say that no matter what happens

I should never become upset, Jesus.

As though my lack of concern is an indication of faith

and my emotional upset means I don’t trust You.

Not true!

If there ever was a “super Christian,” Paul was it
and he had no problem admitting that he was in “great distress.”

Perhaps “super Christianity”

begins with honesty.
