Pray this Lazaroo in grateful wonder:

“…they sang to the LORD: ‘He is good; his love to Israel endures forever.’”
(Ezra 3:11)

Everybody can sing that first line, Jesus!

But that second line?

Everybody can sing it
but not everybody can identify with it.

Israel is Your treasured possession, Your people chosen above everyone on earth!

Only those descended from Abraham
can personally embrace the promise of that last line

…along with those who, like I
trust in You with the faith of Abraham!

Pray this Lazaroo in warm-hearted gratitude:

“…all their glory is like the flowers of the field…”
(1 Peter 1:24)

I know field flowers don’t last long, Jesus

but as they raise their heads under Your bright sun
gently nodding under a passing breeze

they sure are beautiful.

So I’m grateful.

Whatever glory I gain on this earth –

though transitory –

is nevertheless a gift from You.

I don’t deserve it
but I appreciate it.

It’s a sweetener in the sometimes bitter tea of life

on this sin-cursed earth.

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful obedience:

“…had from the beginning.”
(2 John 1:5)

Some of Your commands came later, Jesus

but a handful were inserted deep in our hearts
right from the beginning.

It’s always been right to see what You’ve created

then bow in worship
in stunned awe

and give You thanks.

It’s always been wrong to murder the unborn and aged

no matter what some supreme court declares.

It’s always been right to love others

grateful for the love You continually show us.

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful recognition:

“…as prescribed by David king of Israel.”
(Ezra 3:10)

It takes somebody to prescribe things, Jesus.

If there’s nobody to do that…

…chaos.

That’s why You provide these people to us.

Sometime we’re grateful
sometimes not.

Our problem is that no matter who You provide

they’re not perfect.
They make mistakes.

We think to ourselves, “I could do better.”

Maybe we’re right.

But if You appointed us to the job

there would be people thinking

“I could do better.”

Pray this Lazaroo in full devotion:

“They all march in line, not swerving from their course.”
(Joel 2:7)

If locusts can do that, Jesus…

why can’t I?

Oh, I do well for a while…

then all of a sudden, I swerve
leave the lane You’ve marked out for me.

Do I make it back on course?

Sure. Here I am, talking with You right now
and grateful to be doing it.

But I would really like to mature to the point

where I never stray.

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“…make atonement for the sins of the people.”
(Hebrews 2:17)

I’m one of those people, Jesus!

I’m so sorry that You had to make atonement for me.
But I’m grateful beyond words that You did.

I wish the atonement required was only money, service –

anything other than what it actually was:

Your life.

But I couldn’t pay off my own debt!
My sins had bankrupted me.

My only hope was a completely sinless life given in my place.

Yours.

Pray this Lazaroo with bulldog faith:

“You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins.”
(Amos 3:2)

What a vital reminder, Jesus!

With great blessing
comes proportionate responsibility.

Of those who’ve been given much
much will be demanded.

Of course, You shouldn’t have to demand it.

With gratitude, it should be freely given.

I’ve been blessed with more than I can begin to comprehend!

How dare I give You less
than my all?

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“…he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.”
(Esther 2:17)

Interesting, Jesus.

You needed Esther on the throne to save Your people.
Vashti had to go.

You could have killed Vashti.

Instead, You let her take a moral stand

which she took and lost her throne
while keeping her dignity.

Was Vashti grateful?

Probably no more than I am when You do me a kindness
and I, heartbroken, view it as punishment.

Pray this Lazaroo in holy caution:

“…like death [he] is never satisfied…”
(Habakkuk 2:5)

What a scary place to be, Jesus!

No matter how much success he enjoyed
it would never be enough.

No matter how much money he made
he would always crave more.

No matter how much love he received
he would never feel loved enough.

May that never be said of me!

May it never be true of me.

Teach me to be full, happy, content

with the blessings You’ve showered upon me.
