Pray this Lazaroo with God-given love:

“If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.”
(1 John 2:15)

This is a hard teaching, Jesus.

It’s easy to love the world
because I can see it in all its stunning beauty

It’s harder to love You as You deserve –

because although Your love for me is amazing
and Your works are everywhere to behold

You Yourself are invisible.

That’s probably why so many religions resort to idols.

But I choose to love You!

Pray this Lazaroo to the God who provides everything you need:

“…why go to Assyria to drink water from the River?”
(Jeremiah 2:18)

Great question, Jesus.

By turning to other gods, Your people broke Your heart.
How dare they turn to lifeless idols?

My guess is You’re asking the same question of me every time I sin

buying one of Satan’s lies.
How dare I drink from his foul, poisonous cesspool?

You are my Living Water.

So long as I drink deeply, daily from Your Spring
I will never thirst.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“Their land is full of idols…”
(Isaiah 2:8)

So is mine, Jesus.

Some obvious.
Others less so.

If an idol is anything that so captures my devotion

that when forced to choose

I prefer that person, place, thing or activity to You

then my city, state, nation and world
are overrun by idols.

Of course, that’s not the big question I need to answer:

Are there any idols in my life?

Please help me smash them

before You have to.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“They were in great distress.”
(Judges 2:15)

Been there, Jesus.

But not, I hope, for the same reason they were.

You were fighting against them!

And of course, You were winning.
Every time.

Your people turned away from You to false gods and idols

provoking You to anger.

Not me, LORD! Never!

May all my great distress be caused by Satan
because I remain true to You.

I know You’ll fight my battles and utterly defeat him.

Every time.

Pray this Lazaroo in horrified realization:

“Their land is full of horses; there is no end to their chariots.”
(Isaiah 2:7)

…as is true of us, Jesus!

In developed countries
even our poor have cars and big screen TVs.

In third-world countries
leaders reach out to the world on cell phones.

But as with Judah and Jerusalem

our riches have lied to us, distracted us, sidetracked us.

How many of us, once faithful to You and so blessed

have turned Your blessings into idols?

Open your eyes, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”
(Hosea 3:1)

Satan knows these false gods he parades in front of people

are no gods at all, Jesus.

So he always finds a way to sweeten his lies, to make them easier to swallow –

sometimes with sacred raisin cakes
at other times with drugs, drunkenness, adultery.

But there’s a catch.

As with all poisons
there’s a lethal aftertaste.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“…your people…practice divination like the Philistines…”
(Isaiah 2:6)

If You had a gizzard, Jesus

that would have fried it.

The heathen peoples surrounding them sought the will of false gods by examining inanimate objects such as rods, arrows, cups, animal livers.

They attempted to interpret dreams
consulted so-called holy people and idols.

That Your very own people would turn to all that instead of You?

Unconscionable.

Almost as bad as the so-called unscriptural “experts” we rely on today.

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit:

“Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace…”
(Jonah 2:8)

You are so good to me, Jesus!

You’re beyond good to every person
who draws a breath on this planet.

You don’t treat us as our sins deserve!

Over and over and over again
You forgive us times beyond counting.

You do, that is…

if we look to You as our God.

But those who trust some god instead of You

turn their backs
on their only hope.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“…your people…are full of superstitions…”
(Isaiah 2:6)

It must be so hard for You to bear, Jesus –

seeing Your people hamstrung by their superstitions.

At first, they seem harmless enough –

knocking on wood
not walking under ladders
avoiding black cats who want to stroll in front of us
wearing the same socks we wore when our team last won –

but at heart, they have a deceiving, ugly, hidden danger:

They’re little false gods I trust
instead of You.
