Pray this Lazaroo with total transparency:

“…who search for it more than for hidden treasure.”
(Job 3:21)

Because of His excruciating suffering, Jesus

Job longed for death.
He didn’t want to feel His overwhelming pain anymore.

If he had only known the reason for his agony –

that You were so proud of Him
that You bragged about him to Satan!

That You were about to take away his pain
and bless him beyond measure.

That was the treasure hidden from him.

What’s mine?

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“…if you continue in your faith…not moved from the hope held out in the gospel.”
(Colossians 1:23)

“I’m unmoved from the hope held out in the gospel.”

Powerful, Jesus.

When I pray for something that hasn’t happened.

I’m unmoved from the hope held out in the gospel.

When I lose my job.

I’m unmoved from the hope held out in the gospel.

When my doctor diagnoses me with an incurable illness.

I’m unmoved from the hope held out in the gospel.

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intensity:

“Why is light given to those in misery…?”
(Job 3:20)

I get it, Jesus.

Job’s referring to the light of the sun.
He’s in such agony that he thinks he’d be better off dead.

But as he learned after You restored him

he was dead wrong.

Just because I’m miserable, suffering, struggling

doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be here.

You use the pain of my life to teach me and toughen me…

and then You make it pay off!

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“…the slave is freed from his master.”
(Job 3:19)

Pretty fitting on this 4th of July, Jesus!

There came a day in the history of these United States
when we could no longer endure England’s rule.

But Job was referring to death –

which, because of his pain
looked mighty good to him at that time.

O God!

Help me truly, utterly, completely, irrevocably die
to my old sin master Satan

and walk in the freedom

of obedience to You.

Pray this Lazaroo…in faith:

“Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?”
(Job 3:11)

Job was in agony, Jesus!

wishing he’d never survived that shortest
and longest of all journeys

the trip from the safety of mother
to first breath in the outside world.

But he was wrong.

His suffering was short-lived.
You blessed him more at last than at first.

If only mothers about to abort their babies

could trust You to do the same.

Pray this Lazaroo with total transparency:

“…it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes.”
(Job 3:10)

A person has to be in deep suffering, Jesus

to hate the day of their birth that much..

Job wished he’d never been born

wanted his birthday removed from the calendar.

Perhaps more people than I can begin to imagine

are able to identify with Job’s anguish.

which is precisely why You reveal the depth of his pain

in holy Scripture.

Pray this Lazaroo with utter abandon:

“He assigned…80,000 to be stonecutters…”
(2 Chronicles 2:18)

Not an easy job, Jesus.

Stone cutting requires skill, strength, training.

Not a particularly safe job, either.

Pieces of stone can put out an eye.
Hammers can miss their mark and crush

hands
fingers
arms
legs
feet.

Still, the job had to be done.

Your temple had to be built.

Many of the jobs You assign are like that –

requiring skill, strength, training, risk-taking courage –

because Your kingdom has to be built.

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“Guard the fortress…”
(Nahum 2:1)

What a crucially important reminder, Jesus!

I may think I have a fortress on this earth
but it had better be guarded.

Home…parents…marriage…children…family…job…business…country…

all can be gone faster than I can turn around in shock.

Whatever I think I have
Whoever I think I have
Whatever I think I can do

are from You
are kept by You
can only be guarded by You

for in reality I have only one true Fortress:

You.
