Pray this Lazaroo with wholehearted adoration:

“Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.”
(Luke 1:58)

Elizabeth was old when she gave birth, Jesus.

Other Jewish women most likely looked down on her
supposing God had kept her from having children
because she was guilty of some secret sin.

Zechariah loved her too much to divorce her
though that was his legal right, since she had not conceived.

Oh, how wonderful –

when You come to our rescue!

Pray this Lazaroo in holy awe:

“John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.”
(Matthew 3:4)

No doubt there were some who dressed and ate better, Jesus.

But none preached and baptized better.

I know that because You said among those born of women
none was greater than John the Baptist.

Then You added that the least in the kingdom of God

was greater than he…

which includes me.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.”
(Luke 1:57)

The miracle baby, Jesus!

John the Baptist – born to an elderly couple who couldn’t have children.

“When it was time,” indeed.

You made them wait that long to have this special child
because he would be the one to introduce You to the world:

as the Lamb of God.

Once he accomplished his purpose, he died.
His time came and went.

As will mine.

Pray this Lazaroo in renewed determination:

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
(Matthew 3:2)

Those words of John the Baptist resonate today, Jesus!

He was the one prophesied by Isaiah –

“A voice of one calling in the desert…”

He was the one prophesied by Malachi –

“I will send you the prophet Elijah…”

to prepare the people for Your coming.

You came! Preached! Healed! Died! Resurrected!

Shocked the world!

I’ve got to repent of every wrong thought, word and action.

You’re coming again.

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“In those days, John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea…”
(Matthew 3:1)

Preaching?

Yes, Jesus.

But preaching in the desert?

Uh….why?

Generally, it’s a good idea to go preach where the people are

not where wild goats and cacti
might be the only ones listening.

But that was Your strategy, not John’s.

He was just obeying orders.

Turns out that preaching in the desert was so strange

that You sent vast crowds of curious people out there to him.

Pray this Lazaroo all the way to the marrow of your bones:

“In those days, John the Baptist came…”
(Matthew 3:1)

We could use another John the Baptist right about now, Jesus!

When You sent John he was fearless.
He named names and took no prisoners.

You called him to prepare the way for You
challenging people to live holy lives and turn to God.

Eventually, it cost him his life.

Are You calling me to be a John the Baptist among my family and circle of friends?

Okay.

No matter what the cost..

Pray this Lazaroo in bottomless trust:

“…heard what John had said and…followed Jesus.”
(John 1:40)

I’ve heard what John said, Jesus –

and I’m following You.

Your words through John and the other Bible authors

have the ring of truth like no other.

But that’s not all.

They’re backed up by fact.

Nor is that all.

They’re confirmed by my experience.

If it sounds like the truth

looks like the truth

and lives like the truth

I’m staking my life on it:

It’s the Truth.

Pray this Lazaroo with wholehearted adoration:

“…offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing…”
(Mark 1:44)

Back in the day, Your people offered many sacrifices, Jesus.

It was the blood of the animals
that made atonement for Your people’s sins.

But those sacrifices could never cleanse a sinner’s conscience, could they?

Only Your sacrifice on the cross could do that.

No wonder when John the Baptist saw you coming, he said:

“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“…the baby in my womb leaped for joy.”
(Luke 1:44)

I know late-term babies sometimes leap when they’re startled, Jesus…

but infant John the Baptist leaped for joy
when he heard Your mother’s voice?

Yes.

That’s exactly what happened.
I believe it to the bone.

By normal reckoning, neither of You should have been in any mother’s womb.

But by the miracle-working power of Your Father
according to His plan

You were.

I love it when miracles are afoot!

Pray this Lazaroo with deep desire:

“As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears…
(Luke 1:44)

…something truly amazing happened.

I don’t know that any of my greetings
has ever had that effect, Jesus.

But it would be awesome!

I’m not really talking about what happened to Elizabeth
when Mary spoke, the baby leaped in her womb
and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.

What I mean is

I’d love to so faithfully convey Your message
that somebody’s life forever changes.
