Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“Joshua told the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.’ Joshua said to the priests, ‘Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.’ So they took it up and went ahead of them.”
(Joshua 3:5-6)

These two commands are not unrelated, Jesus.

As I consecrate myself

I need the life-changing wisdom, comfort and power

of Your holy Word to go before me

every step of the way.

Pray this Lazaroo with fierce determination:

“Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and said, ‘Because this nation has violated the covenant I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.’”
(Judges 2:20-21)

That explains some things, Jesus –

about what happened to Israel
and what could happen to me.

May I keep Your covenant of love and listen to You!

so that You drive out every enemy
Satan sends against me.

Pray this Lazaroo with an eager to obey heart:

“Joshua and all the Israelites…went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.”
(Joshua 3:1)

There are many reasons to camp before crossing over, Jesus.

Some of them good.

Others…not so much.

Sometimes it’s being afraid of the crossing
or fear of what’s on the other side.

At other times it’s procrastination
or a preference for the known, over the unknown.

But may I never hesitate to cross any river in my path

to go where You send me!

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out…”
(Joshua 3:1)

That’s a good time to set out, isn’t it, Jesus?

An early start can lead to an earlier finish!

Of course, due to health issues, family dynamics or work schedule

not everyone can.

You know that and make it up to them.

However, there are those who can and should rise early

but are too lazy to do so.

May I never be counted in their number.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“…all the people are melting in fear because of us.”
(Joshua 2:24)

The men Joshua sent to spy out the land needed that encouragement, Jesus!

So did Joshua and the Israelites.

You were calling them to attack a huge, fortified city.

They had never done anything like this.

To realize You had gone before them and weakened the resolve of their enemies provided a huge boost of confidence.

You were with them!

Remind me each day, LORD:

You’ve gone ahead of me!

Pray this Lazaroo in steadfast faith:

“They…came to Joshua…and told him everything that had happened to them.”
(Joshua 2:23)

Joshua was eager to hear their report, Jesus!

After all, he had sent them to spy out the land.

But there aren’t many people in my life eager to hear

everything that’s happened to me.

They might not mind hearing the highlights

but the more detailed I become
the more their minds wander.

It takes a real friend

to genuinely want to hear the whole story.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“They…forded the river…”
(Joshua 2:23)

– the very river the entire army was about to cross on dry land, Jesus!

But this first time
Joshua’s two spies had to get wet to make it across.

No surprise.

You do it both ways, don’t You?

Sometimes You perform a miracle.

But most of the time You supply the strength
for me to accomplish Your tasks the old-fashioned way

requiring me to work, stretch, struggle.

But that’s okay!

Either way…

I win.

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful allegiance:

“…he will lead Israel to inherit it.”
(Deuteronomy 1:38)

That’s exactly what You enabled Joshua to do, Jesus!

He took over from Moses and led Your people
into the land You promised to give them.

Isn’t that what every leader is called to do?

To gratefully receive the baton from those who’ve led before
following You every step of the way

in order to lead Your people into the fullness
of Your promises?

O God!

Give us such leaders!

Pray this Lazaroo in steadfast faith:

“When they left…”
(Joshua 2:22)

Joshua’s spies left when they had to, Jesus.

Otherwise, they would have failed in Your purpose.

There’s a time for me to leave, too.

Jobs…relationships…homes…churches…cities…countries –

any of those and plenty else –

are up for grabs.

But sometimes You call me to stay in them for now…

or for the duration.

So the reason for me to leave anything, anyone, anywhere

is not because it’s hard, boring, dangerous, painful

but only because You say so.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“…she tied the scarlet cord in the window.”
(Joshua 2:21)

And by that scarlet cord, Jesus

Rahab the prostitute saved hers and her family’s lives
when Joshua destroyed the city of Jericho.

I’m thinking of another scarlet cord, Father –

the blood of Your Son, shed on the cross
paying for the sins of all who believe.

Even less deserving than Rahab

I’m tying that scarlet cord in my window
for You to see when You come for Your own!
