Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“…he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death…”
(Colossians 1:22)

It wasn’t fair, Jesus

not even close.

But it was the only way!

Whether we tried with all our might or didn’t
there was not a chance that we could earn our salvation.

We were broke, busted, bankrupt.

Helpless.

It took You and You alone to buy us back

from the devil to whom we had sold ourselves.

Somebody had to pay

and that Somebody
was You.

Pray this Lazaroo in deepened understanding:

“But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.”
(2 Kings 3:5)

When someone is forced, Jesus

it never lasts.

First chance they get to skedaddle – BOOM! They’re gone.

Free will is messy, uncontrollable, sometimes takes forever

but when freely given, at least has a chance

to survive the hard blows of life.

You could force every last one of us to bow before You

but if You did
it wouldn’t mean a thing.

Pray this Lazaroo with sobriety:

“…those who oppose you…will be destroyed…”
(Philippians 1:28)

This might seem like heady stuff to some people, Jesus…

but that’s not how it’s supposed to strike me, is it?

Is it encouraging to know that one day I will get relief from my enemies?

Sure.

But it’s also enormously sobering.

I don’t deserve for anybody to be destroyed for opposing me!

But it’s not really about me, is it?

It’s about those who oppose me
because they oppose You.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“The king replied, ‘Make it, my mother; I will not refuse you.”
(1 Kings 2:20)

I know You can identify, Jesus.

When Your mother asked You to do something, You couldn’t say no…

even though You told her Your hour had not yet come.

This, though, was different.

When David heard his mother’s request
he had to turn her down.

O Holy Spirit!

Help me first find out what’s going on
before I stick my foot in my mouth.

Pray this Lazaroo in zealous love:

“…it is the gift of God…”
(Ephesians 2:8)

That’s what my salvation is, Jesus –

an undeserved, unmerited, outrageous gift.

The people I live and work with would all pitch in with a passionate

“Amen!”

As do I.

The thoughts with which I wrestle
the words that slip out

my countless inexcusable behaviors
the actions I should’ve taken but didn’t

testify that my home in heaven is a miscarriage of justice

and the highest proof
of Your costly, loving mercy.

Pray this Lazaroo with earnest desire:

“All right, let them do it.”
(2 Samuel 2:14)

It’s hard to turn down a request, Jesus

especially if it comes from somebody important to me
or somebody who’s persistent and passionate.

But some requests need to be turned down no matter who makes them

or how insistently they’re made.

This was one of them

and both generals failed.

Don’t let me become a pushover, Father!

If it’s wrong
help me stand
no matter who or what.

Pray this Lazaroo with catalytic dedication:

“All they asked was…the very thing I was eager to do.”
(Galatians 2:10)

It doesn’t get much better than that, Jesus.

Except…how often does that happen?

So much of the time what people want me to do

bends me out of shape like a pretzel.

But I love that every time You ask me to do something

it turns out to be exactly what I would have been eager to do

if I had known as much as You.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep respect:

“The LORD…lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes…”
(1 Samuel 2:7-8)

Only You could pull that off, Jesus!

Princes go to great pains to demonstrate:

“We’re not like everybody else!”

They want us to believe they’re better
above the common riffraff.

You, of course, know better.

So to make Your point
You reach down to the lowest of the low

and make it clear to all

that every person You create
has inestimable value.

Pray this Lazaroo in measured consideration:

“…to some extent…”
(2 Corinthians 2:5)

Too much of the time, Jesus

I think it’s all or nothing.

But it’s seldom either.

Most of the time it’s, “to some extent.”

I struggle with that.

I want things to be one way or the other.

I’m not sure how to handle them

when they’re a little bit of both.

But maybe what I desire is simply more of You

because You’re All

and compared to You

everything else is nothing.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“So Boaz said to Ruth, ‘My daughter, listen to me…’”
(Ruth 2:8)

Little did he know, Jesus…

that this young woman he called, “daughter”
would soon become his wife.

There’s a lot I don’t know, too, Father.

Thank You for revealing parts of it to me
when I need to know it!

But some of what I wish I knew

You keep hidden.

I don’t know why, but I know this:

There’s a good reason.
And I trust You.
