Pray this Lazaroo with utter abandon:

“Now since we are under obligation to the palace and it is not proper for us to see the king dishonored, we are sending this message to inform the king…”
(Ezra 4:14)

King Artaxerxes had to smell the stench from this heaping pile of garbage from a mile away, Jesus!

These two wicked, jealous yahoos were tattling
because Your chosen servant
was rattling their cages
by obeying You.

Great God!

Help me be a cage-rattler
instead of a garbage-pusher.

Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“We have heard a message from the Lord: An envoy was sent to the nations…”
(Obadiah 1:1)

Have you sent an envoy to my nation, Jesus?

If so, who?

Many of Your people ignored John the Baptist

not realizing he was the Elijah You sent
to prepare the way for Your First Coming.

Please grant us discernment to weed out false prophets!

But I don’t want to miss any envoy You’ve sent
to prepare us for Your Second Coming.

Pray this Lazaroo in wholehearted commitment:

“…we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, ‘So I declared on oath in my anger, “They shall never enter my rest.”’”
(Hebrews 4:2-3)

Hearing Your Word is no good to me, Jesus

if I don’t believe it.

But I do! Thank God, I do!

Pray this Lazaroo with anticipation:

“The vision of Obadiah.”
(Obadiah 1:1)

And so begins the shortest book of the Old Testament, Jesus.

From scant clues within its 21 verses
we surmise Obadiah may have been
the first of the writing prophets.

Obadiah is a popular Bible name, given to 12 different men.

However, we don’t know for sure that he was any of them.

But these words aren’t from him, are they?

They are a direct, powerful, blistering message of warning

through him
from You.

Sell out totally to God as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…you will suffer persecution for ten days.”
(Revelation 2:10)

At first glance, that’s not a particularly uplifting message, Jesus!

You could have prevented persecution from ever touching their lives.

But on second look, it is encouraging:

Since You chose not to prevent the persecution
there had to be a good reason for it.

You never allow Satan to touch Your people unless it’s worthwhile –

to You and to us.

Good to remember…

next time You allow persecution to come my way.

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit

“Afterward the Israelites will return…”
(Hosea 3:5)

That’s what it usually takes for me to return to You, Jesus…

a sign, a tragedy, an event, a message
something that rocks my world.

Only then do I do what I should have done without any push from You:

Turn around, head in the right direction
all the way back home.

Of course, if we’re talking what I should have done…

I never should have strayed from You to begin with.

Pray this Lazaroo with heartfelt pleading:

“Go, assemble the elders of Israel…”
(Exodus 3:16)

Israel’s elders spoke to and for Your people, Jesus.

They were seasoned, experienced, wise, trustworthy.

But for all that, the message You told Moses to deliver to them

would have been almost impossible to accept
unless you moved on the hearts of the elders to believe it –

which You did.

Do that for me, Holy Spirit!

When You send me to someone with an amazing message, please:

Go before me.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“My message and my preaching…”
(1 Corinthians 2:4)

The message and the preaching…

they’re not the same, are they, Jesus?

You’re the one who gives the message.

The preacher is the one who delivers it.

Many a great message

has been diminished by a poor preacher.

But Your Word is so powerful and compelling

that even the worst of preachers

if they manage to quote from the Bible

can watch in awe

as You totally transform their hearer’s lives.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“My message and my preaching were not with wise…words…”
(1 Corinthians 2:4)

Well, that was totally unexpected, Jesus.

I would have thought as educated as he was
the Apostle Paul would have dropped pearls of wisdom on them

in every other sentence.

But he was no longer interested in impressing them

getting them to focus on himself.

He wasn’t trying to create followers of Paul.

He was all about one thing and one thing only:

pointing them to You.

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intensity:

“…he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty.”
(Malachi 2:7)

What a privilege, Jesus!

…and what an awesome responsibility.

To be one whose job it is to share Your truth with others

is a glorious, fearsome calling.

Once that was the task You assigned to Your priests, Your prophets

but today…on this side of the cross…

no longer just them.

That glad pleasure…that terrifying mission…

has been given to every one
of those who by faith follow You

including me.
