Pray this Lazaroo with explosive feeling:

“…a temple had not yet been built for the Name of the Lord. Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.”
(1 Kings 3:2-3)

Solomon had an excuse for doing wrong, Jesus.

There was no temple.

But he didn’t have to go to one of those high places You so detested!

Satan will always provide me with an excuse to do wrong.

But to do wrong
there is no acceptable excuse.

Be duly warned, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though they do not know it, they are guilty and will be held responsible. They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value…and they will be forgiven.”
(Leviticus 5:17-18)

This answers one of my questions, Jesus:

Ignorance of Your Law is no excuse.

If I refuse to study Your Word to learn Your commands

I will pay the consequences.

Pray this Lazaroo in solemn recognition:

“Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?”
(Hebrews 3:16-17)

It’s bad enough to miss Your will when I haven’t heard from You, Jesus

but it’s inexcusable when I have.
No wonder You were so angry with Your people!

The thing is…

I’ve read the Bible.
I’ve heard.

Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Return to the LORD your God…”
(Joel 2:13)

Why would any of us ever leave You, Jesus?

You’re loving, kind, merciful, forgiving, all-wise, all-powerful –

the Only God!

How could any of us who has touched Your greatness

stray from Your loving arms?

But we do.

There’s no excuse. None.

My only hope when I commit the unthinkable
and cave in to Satan’s temptation

is to repent with every fiber of my being
and return to You with all my heart!

Pray this Lazaroo with clear-headed introspection:

“You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.”
(Romans 2:1)

But it’s so hard to see our own sins, isn’t it, Jesus?

We excuse them, justify them, flat-out ignore them.

We’re so busy pointing out the flaws in others

that we fail to understand that our disgust with them
arises from unadmitted disgust with ourselves.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“…receiving no help from the pagans.”
(3 John 1:7)

Is this a big ol’ surprise, Jesus?

No.
Hardly.

Pagans aren’t in the habit of helping me – or any of Your followers.

In fact, just the opposite.

They tend to get in our way

quite frequently opposing us.

So, receiving no help from the pagans

is no excuse for not being about Your business –

the business of sharing Your gospel with pagans

and being of eternal help to them.

Pray this Lazaroo without excuse:

“If a member of the community sins unintentionally…”
(Leviticus 4:27)

That can certainly happen, Jesus

especially with some of the more obscure points of Jewish law.

But most of Your commands? Things like –

telling the truth
not killing people
faithfully attending church
not committing adultery
sharing my faith
not stealing
pleasing You
not craving other people’s possessions
helping the poor –

those nobody has to tell me to obey.

If I break them, it’s no accident.

I did it on purpose.

Pray this Lazaroo in humble adulation:

“…loved by the Lord…”
(2 Thessalonians 2:13)

Still blows my mind, Father!

Jesus loves me this I know
for the Bible tells me so.

Why, Jesus?

How can You love a sinner like me?

Because of the evil I’ve done

Your love for me cost You Your life
an ugly, excruciatingly painful, humiliating

death on the cross.

They laughed at You, taunted You, ridiculed You
slapped You, beat You, despised You

because of me.

Your incomprehensible love!

demands mine.

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“When he is made aware of the sin he committed…”
(Leviticus 4:23)

It’s possible to break one of Your rules and not know it, Jesus…

sort of.

But because Your rules are there to help and protect me

down deep, I usually know:

Something’s amiss.

I’m at least vaguely aware I’ve crossed some sort of line
done something unwise, even potentially harmful.

So when a courageous person dares to point out my sin

in reality

I have no excuse.

Pray this Lazaroo with growing understanding:

“When a leader sins unintentionally…”
(Leviticus 4:22)

And who is more likely to sin, Jesus?

The leader is on point, taking the majority of the risks.
The pressure is greater, the responsibilities magnified.

With all that going on – even with a diligent leader –
mistakes will be made.

Still, the leader has no excuse.

He or she is guilty. Period.
Correction has to be made…if possible, restitution.

Even then, they still lead – showing the way

for their unintentionally sinning followers.
