Pray this Lazaroo in steadfast faith:

“They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
(Exodus 5:8-9)

But they weren’t lazy, Jesus!

They were obeying You!

May I always remember:

Even when I’m doing exactly what You desire
this can happen to me.

When others judge me harshly

should I quit obeying You?

No!
Never.

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit:

“But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin.”
(Micah 3:8)

It’s possible, Jesus!

That while all around me are weak, timid and afraid
You would choose to make me bold and strong.

That was true of Your prophet Micah

because He was obeying You
with every fiber of his being.

Weak or strong, bold or timid
may I do the same.

Pray this Lazaroo with utter abandon:

“Now since we are under obligation to the palace and it is not proper for us to see the king dishonored, we are sending this message to inform the king…”
(Ezra 4:14)

King Artaxerxes had to smell the stench from this heaping pile of garbage from a mile away, Jesus!

These two wicked, jealous yahoos were tattling
because Your chosen servant
was rattling their cages
by obeying You.

Great God!

Help me be a cage-rattler
instead of a garbage-pusher.

Pray this Lazaroo in holy fear:

“Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.”
(Haggai 2:21)

Getting an assignment like this from You would be a challenge, Jesus.

First of all, it’s hard to deliver bad news.

Secondly, news this huge and terrifying
would almost certainly directly impact me.

Finally, what if You didn’t do it in the governor’s lifetime?
I’d look like a false prophet.

But ultimately, none of that matters, does it?

My job is very simple:

Obey.

Pray this Lazaroo with unshakable belief:

“On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, ‘No! He is to be called John.’”
(Luke 1:59-60)

Her husband’s lack of belief had already cost them both, Jesus.

Elizabeth wasn’t about to make the same mistake.

You had told them their son’s name was to be John.

So John is what she named him.

May I obey You

with that same conviction!

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“In those days, John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea…”
(Matthew 3:1)

Preaching?

Yes, Jesus.

But preaching in the desert?

Uh….why?

Generally, it’s a good idea to go preach where the people are

not where wild goats and cacti
might be the only ones listening.

But that was Your strategy, not John’s.

He was just obeying orders.

Turns out that preaching in the desert was so strange

that You sent vast crowds of curious people out there to him.

Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.”
(2 John 1:6)

We’re not to obey everything, are we, Jesus?

Obedience – all by itself – is not the goal.

There are countless people issuing orders in my direction –

presidents, governors, mayors, bosses, doctors, experts, friends, family.

When should I obey them?

When their orders are in harmony with Your commands.

When should I wisely but staunchly disobey them?

When doing so would require me to disobey You.

Pray this Lazaroo with undying love:

“And this is love: that we walk in obedience…”
(2 John 1:6)

Contrary to popular opinion, Jesus

love isn’t a feeling.

Feelings are deceptive.

Sometimes I feel good when I should feel bad.
Sometimes I feel bad when I should feel good.

Feelings are about me.

Obedience is about You –

and those around me
who can’t feel what I feel

but who know they’re loved
when they see the evidence.

Feelings come and go.

Love stays.
Because love obeys.

Pray this Lazaroo with renewed determination:

“Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Ninevah.”
(Jonah 3:3)

But when did he do that, Jesus?

It wasn’t when You told him to go the first time.
It was only after he ran from You

got swallowed by the fish You sent for him
and got vomited out on shore.

So much for my questions about why I have to go through my own traumatic situations.

Whatever it takes!

…when I don’t obey the first time.

Take notes, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“So he got up…”
(Matthew 2:21)

Forgive me, Jesus, but isn’t that what Your stepdad did

when an angel told him to take Your mom home to be his wife
even though she was pregnant?

and what he did when an angel told him
to take You and Your mom to Egypt?

Now, he’s obeying the angel again –

taking You and Your mom back home to Israel.

Each time He got up and did it.

Sounds like a plan.
