Pray this Lazaroo in utter submission:

“Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden…?”
(Job 3:23)

Well…because every man’s – and woman’s! – life is hidden from them.

Isn’t that right, Jesus?

Just about the time I think I’ve got it all figured out

I’m shown quite clearly – and sometimes stunningly –
that I don’t.

You alone know the way I’m about to take.

I can carefully lay plans

that will never be realized

because I’m not in control of my life.

You Are.

Pray this Lazaroo in humbled gratitude:

“God chose you to be saved…”
(2 Thessalonians 2:13)

It wasn’t up to me, was it, Jesus?

Before I could choose You
You had to choose me.

If You hadn’t chosen me
I wouldn’t have wanted to choose You.

That’s unthinkable, now.

I’m so thankful I’ve chosen You!
It seems like such a no-brainer!

But that absolutely explains why it’s not a no-brainer for the majority of people on earth.

Wow.
I’m one of the few.
I’m chosen!

Pray this Lazaroo in steadfast faith:

“Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs…”
(Acts 2:22)

You never attended an accredited college, Jesus.

You never hung an accredited diploma on Your office wall –

and not only because You never had an office. 😉

Your accreditation wasn’t a human institution of higher (actually lower) learning

nor a piece of calligraphy-decorated paper.

You Are accredited to us by the things You said and did

that only God could do.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“…those who long for death that does not come…”
(Job 3:21)

It’s pretty easy for human beings to kill themselves, Jesus

if that’s what they really want to do.

But our lives are not our own, are they?

You’re the Life-Giver…
and the Life-Taker.

Only You know when it’s best for me to check in…

and check out.

I’m here for a season to do Your will.

Only when my work is done
will I see Your Face.

Pray this Lazaroo with fierce determination:

“…on the day they are made ready…”
(Nahum 2:3)

When Ninevah’s enemies were ready

bad things happened.

But the reverse is also true!

Wonderful things happen when I do everything within my power
to get ready for You to do
what only You can do.

I’m not fooling myself.

I know I can’t make my dreams come true.

Only You!
Only You!
Only You!

But You expect me to give it all I’ve got

while I wait for You.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“He will guard the feet of his saints…”
(1 Samuel 2:9)

Guard mine, Jesus!

My feet have taken me to wonderful places
and some not so wonderful.

When I was younger

I thought becoming an adult
meant finally getting to go wherever I wanted to go.

But since when do I know enough to make that decision?

You alone know the end from the beginning.

Now all I want

is for You to lead me where You want to go.

Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“…you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth…”
(1 Peter 1:22)

I didn’t know I could purify myself, Jesus.

I thought You were the only one who could do that.

I don’t really want to be specific

but let’s just say I require some serious purification.

No matter how much I obey

I don’t see how that could possibly eradicate all my sins.

Unless…what You’re saying is –

when I obey the truth

in Your mercy

You perform the purification.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“The shields of his soldiers are red…”
(Nahum 2:3)

That might be paint on their shields, Jesus…

but it’s probably blood.

Since their shields are covered in blood

and since they’re still standing
their enemies must have fallen.

These soldiers must be awfully good.

Not a pretty thought, Father!

But there’s no way around it:
that’s the reality of battle.

Some of those walking around have my blood on their shields, Father.

Why am I still here?
Only You.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“…to keep themselves alive.”
(Lamentations 1:19)

Which, of course, is something I don’t have the power to do, Jesus.

I can eat.
I can work to buy food.

I can go to the doctor
take medicine.

I can go to the gym, work out, jog, lift weights
do my best to get in tip-top shape.

But try though I might, I can’t keep life in my body.

You alone have the ultimate power of life and death.
You alone.
