“Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer…must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.”
(1 Timothy 3:1-2, 7)

Evil people love to tear down Your leaders, Jesus.

It’s not hard to do.
Try though they might, leaders are imperfect people.

Guard the reputation of the sincere shepherds of Your flock!

May all their faults be minor
and their devotion to You shine for all to see.

Pray this Lazaroo in humble surrender:

“Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.”
(1 Timothy 3:1,6)

“Now the overseer… must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)

What a challenge for this man You’ve called into Your service, Jesus!

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intensity:

“Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.”
(1 Timothy 3:2-3)

Those are a lot of requirements, Jesus.

No wonder some people see them
and back away from pursuing this holy office.

But these are the bare minimums!

Isn’t this the holy life to which You’ve called
absolutely every one of us?

You’ve set the overseer bar awfully high, Jesus

and for good reason.

If the overseer stumbles or falls, it’s a domino effect:

A whole lot of people can get hurt.

That’s why Satan relentlessly and ferociously attacks the overseer –

along with their family, friends and ministries, isn’t it?

To be above reproach
doesn’t mean to be above attack.

During the time You walked this earth

constant attack

is exactly what Satan did to You.

It’s natural, Jesus –

to look at what one of Your leaders is doing and think:

“I’d like to do that!”

It’s a noble thing to want to serve You.

They are to be commended, encouraged, helped,
guided, taught, prayed over.

But O God!

May only those You’ve truly called pursue that course

because in truth

they know not what they ask.
