Pray this Lazaroo, overwhelmed with gratitude:

“…the word of the Lord is against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines. He says, ‘I will destroy you, and none will be left.’”
(Zephaniah 2:5)

It’s one thing to be defeated in battle, Jesus

to be shamed and disgraced
taken captive, reduced to slavery.

But this time it was worse.

The Philistines so infuriated You with their blatant idolatry
that You threatened to annihilate them

leaving no survivors.

That’s what my sins deserve.

But instead of wrath –

through the cross –

You’ve offered me mercy!

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Aviv near the Kebar River. And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days—overwhelmed.”
(Ezekiel 3:15)

That’s how bad Ezekiel’s countrymen had become, Jesus.

He couldn’t believe what he was seeing!

Your people doing detestable things – things forbidden in Your Law.
Most of all – unthinkably! – Your people worshiping other gods.

Once they forsook you
the vile behavior soon followed.

O Jesus!

Keep me close to You!

Pray this Lazaroo overwhelmed with gratitude:

“From this day on I will bless you.”
(Haggai 2:19)

You had been punishing Your people, Jesus.

Because of their sins against You

they planted much, but harvested little
they ate, but didn’t have enough
they drank, but never quenched their thirst
they put on clothes, but couldn’t keep warm
they earned money…which dwindled away.

Then came the day when You said, “Enough is enough!”

You continue to treat me better than I deserve, LORD!

I’m thankful.
Beyond words.

Allow yourself to be overwhelmed with gratitude as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…the LORD has a charge to bring against you…”
(Hosea 4:1)

Could there be anything more chilling, Jesus –

than, seated at the defendant’s table,
to look over at the other table and recognize with a shock:

You’re the Prosecutor.

You’re also the Jury of Father, Son, Holy Spirit

and Judge.

What would be my chances of an acquittal?

Zero. You don’t bring a charge unless it’s true.

…until I see my  Defender seated next to me

and it’s You.

Pray this Lazaroo with total transparency:

“…who search for it more than for hidden treasure.”
(Job 3:21)

Because of His excruciating suffering, Jesus

Job longed for death.
He didn’t want to feel His overwhelming pain anymore.

If he had only known the reason for his agony –

that You were so proud of Him
that You bragged about him to Satan!

That You were about to take away his pain
and bless him beyond measure.

That was the treasure hidden from him.

What’s mine?

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“…Jesus Christ…will be with us…”
(2 John 1:3)

That’s what I have to know, Jesus –

that You’ll be with me.

I’m aware that’s backwards.

I’m the one who’s supposed to be following You.

And I am.
Imperfectly.

Which is why I need reassurance
when I mess up.

Because it’s when I’m outnumbered, overwhelmed, flat-out scared

that I have to be confident You’ll never leave me alone.

But that’s the secret, isn’t it?

You’re with me
when I’m with You.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“They laid its beams…”
(Nehemiah 3:6)

There they were, Jesus…

repairing the Jeshanah Gate of Jerusalem.

When they laid those beams, they weren’t done.

There was a lot of work left to do.

Just as they were, I’m presented with a choice:

I can focus on the size of the huge task ahead of me
and become discouraged

Or I can be filled with thanksgiving for what You’ve accomplished through me

and be invigorated to get back to work.
