Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”
(James 3:13)

Once again I’m reminded, Jesus:

Talk is cheap.

It’s not enough that I know the truth.

I have to live it!

If it’s truth I’m living

I won’t be boastful or proud.
I’ll be grateful and humble.

That’s the good life to which You’ve called me –

one that’s safe for others to follow.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave a few grapes?”
(Obadiah 1:5)

Yes they would, Jesus.

Grape pickers try to gather most of the grapes

but it slows them down too much
to pick every single one of them.

You, however, are informing proud Edom

that You’re about to pick them clean

leaving nothing but memories
of what they used to possess.

Help me live clean, Holy Spirit

so I don’t have to be picked clean.

Grasp it! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed. The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame.”
(Proverbs 3:34-35)

Much of my society has this reversed, Jesus.

They think proud mockers are strong, successful.
They envy them, aspire to be like them.

But the wise among us know better.

Today, their humility has brought them oppression

but tomorrow, eternal honor awaits!

If and when I’m forced to choose –

to have it today or have it tomorrow –

I choose forever in heaven with You!

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty…”
(Isaiah 2:12)

You have a day in store for me, too, Jesus –

but not that day! Please, not that day!

I don’t think there’s any pride in me, any sense of loftiness…

but if there is, eradicate it! Stomp it out! Kill it!

I know You hate it, can’t tolerate it.

So do I.

All I possess or any good I’ve done

is from You.

Pray this Lazaroo in growing wisdom:

“…human pride brought low…”
(Isaiah 2:11)

There’s a kind of pride that is good, wholesome, healthy, Jesus.

It’s being proud of You.
It’s being proud of what You do.
It’s being proud of what You enable others to do.

But human pride takes no notice of You.

Human pride puffs itself up
boasting that all its achievements come from itself.

Godly pride points to the heavens to acknowledge You.

Human pride pounds on its own chest

until it collapses.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“They will occupy the fields of…Samaria…”
(Obadiah 1:19)

For years Your people refused to enter Samaria, Jesus –

home of those who intermarried with non-Jews
who mixed worship of You with worship of false gods.

But You loved them, ministered to them, won them to Yourself!

How often You draw closer to the outcast
than to the proud and haughty!

Remind me not to seek acceptance by the in-crowd, Holy Spirit

but to search for those

who are searching for You.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Then you will become their victim.”
(Habakkuk 2:7)

We all believe we’re better off than some people, Jesus.

But just because that’s true today
doesn’t mean it will always be so.

You raise up those who are low

and humble those You’ve lifted so high
that they’ve become proud and arrogant
convinced of their superiority.

Next time You bless me, LORD

help me be humbled
by the knowledge that it’s Your loving, merciful grace

and not what I deserve.

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“…it has been granted to you…”
(Philippians 1:29)

I like to think of myself as somebody who’s earned it, Jesus

a person who works hard to get what I’ve got.

But that’s such a self-delusion!

Everything I have…am…know…do
has been granted.

My very self, life, parents, circumstances, gifts, experiences, emotions –

all are gifts from Your loving, generous hand.

Rather than bragging in self-congratulation

pounding my chest with off-putting pride

I should be humbled – filled to the brim with gratitude.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep respect:

“The LORD…lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes…”
(1 Samuel 2:7-8)

Only You could pull that off, Jesus!

Princes go to great pains to demonstrate:

“We’re not like everybody else!”

They want us to believe they’re better
above the common riffraff.

You, of course, know better.

So to make Your point
You reach down to the lowest of the low

and make it clear to all

that every person You create
has inestimable value.
