Take warning, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…the wicked will be cut off from the land…”
(Proverbs 2:22)

Without a land to live in, Jesus

there’s no way to go home.

Of course, before You cut them off

the wicked believe they’re getting away with the evil they’re doing.

They don’t believe there’s a God in heaven who not only sees

but will do something about it.

But when they’re cut off, do they repent?

No.

They blame everyone else and curse You

till their dying breath.

Pray this Lazaroo with utter abandon:

“Salvation comes from the LORD.”
(Jonah 2:9)

Okay, Jesus…that’s true!

But not exactly a news flash.
That’s pretty much Your specialty.

But this statement comes from the mouth of the runaway prophet Jonah

from inside the belly of a great fish
who had swallowed him
and was trying to digest him.

So this was a statement of pure faith!

I love that You give those who run from You
the chance to repent, turn around
and run back.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“Does a trap spring up from the ground if it has not caught anything?”
(Amos 3:5)

I think I can answer that one, Jesus:

No. Not usually.

If my own sin has trapped me, show me exactly where I’ve misstepped

so I can repent, stop doing it and escape!

But if You’re the one who’s put me in a position where I can’t move

in order to get my attention and teach me something?

You’ve succeeded.
I’m all ears.

Pray this Lazaroo in heart-bursting love:

“The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.”
(2 Corinthians 2:6)

I love that about You, Jesus!

Yes – unlike some suppose – You punish.

But You know exactly when to stop punishing the sinner

to give them a chance to catch their breath

repent

and start over with renewed hope.

Of course, there’s another crowd.

They’re always disappointed
when You don’t smash the sinner into oblivion.

But as the repentant sinner You haven’t hopelessly smashed

I’m beyond grateful.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.”
(Haggai 2:16)

No expectation is more false, Jesus

than when we think we can thumb our noses at You
without consequences.

What throws us off is Your patience with us.

You seldom punish us right away, as we so richly deserve.
You give us time – so much time! –

to repent and turn it around.

How much better to go expecting 50 measures

and find 1000.

Pray this Lazaroo in triumphant humility:

“…he has…sent me against the nations that have plundered you…”
(Zechariah 2:8)

That’s all I need to know, Jesus.

There will come a day when You will send Your mighty angel

to right the wrongs
to pay back evildoers
to make sure justice is served
to avenge me of my adversaries.

Of course, I don’t want that angel to visit me!

So I need to be sure that whatever wrongs I’ve committed
are confessed, repented of, forsaken, under Your blood.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”
(Revelation 2:5)

I do want you to come to me, Jesus

but not for that reason!

So I repent –

of all the evil thoughts I’ve entertained
of all the unkind words I’ve spoken
of all the things I’ve done that did not honor You

knowing that repentance is not mere words.

It’s action –

changing course
doing a 180

from this moment forward.

Pray this Lazaroo with explosive feeling:

“Once you were…enemies in your minds…”
(Colossians 1:21)

It’s true, Jesus.

There was a time when I was Your enemy.
I wanted my own way, not Yours.

So You allowed me to discover the hard way –

though not as hard as it could have been! –

that my way had a few holes in it.
Okay. More like Swiss cheese.

The thing that stuns and melts me

is the way You welcome me with open arms
the moment I repent.

Pray this Lazaroo in sobered assessment:

“You have abandoned your people…”
(Isaiah 2:6)

It certainly seems like that during some seasons, Jesus

and in reality, You do abandon Your people
for a time.

When we repeatedly sin against You

You withdraw.

It’s one thing when we try and fail

repent, get up and try again.

But it’s an entirely different matter

when we willingly, knowingly, deliberately reject You.

That’s when You back off for a while

and let us stew
in our own foul juices.

Pray this Lazaroo with full-on ardor:

“Repent…”
(Revelation 2:5)

One word, Jesus

the only hope this repeat offender has.

Words are cheap.

I can say I’m sorry and mean it.

But I’ve got to hate what I did
not just hate the fact that I got caught.

I’ve got to turn it around
make amends
do something different.

And the next time that same temptation shows up at my door selling its filthy wares

I’ve got to spit in its face
and slam the door.
